Pastor: 'I don't know' why God allowed theater massacre

Even as some ministers and theologians tried to make sense of Friday's deadly attack in Aurora, Colo., Pastor Jeff Noble of Aurora's New Life Community Church told his congregation that it's not possible to understand how God could allow such a tragedy to happen.

?When our world goes periodically crazy, a flood of questions can come into our minds,? Noble said during his Sunday morning sermon. ?The question we all probably struggle with: Why did God allow this? My response is: I don?t know."

Noble's church is one of many houses of worship to open their doors to the grieving community of Aurora since Friday's deadly attack.

A five-minute drive from the movie theater, the church, like many institutions in Aurora, was touched by the violence: a former youth minister lost his father, Weston Cowden, and a member of the nearby Buckley Air Force base said an airwoman in his unit was one of the 58 injured.

In the days since the attack, the church has helped provide meals to the military base, offered counseling services, and shared information on those affected by the shootings.

Noble told the congregation that he started ?bawling like a baby? as he drove past the scene of the theater massacre on Friday, ?because I think it was then that it hit me. This wasn?t some TV show. This wasn?t some event that happened 1,000 miles away,? he said. ?It happened in our community.?

Scott Shreffler, 18, of Aurora, Colo., is overcome with emotion during the Sunday morning service at New Life Community Church.

During the service, members of the church got up to say prayers for loved ones and even those they don't know.?

?It?s not only okay but it?s good to express your honest feelings to God and to others about how you?re feeling ? about this situation,? Noble told the few hundred people in attendance.?

He urged members of the church to be a comfort to others. He said, too, that the attack was a reminder that everyone?s days were numbered and it was important, however unpleasant, to think about that.

After the service, during which people shed tears, hugged one another and clenched their hands in prayer, one man said he couldn't believe he could ever feel fearful in a place like Aurora.

?I?m just so hurt. I just can?t believe that somebody would do this,? said Daniel Sharp of the 310^th Unit Reservist at nearby Buckley. ?I would have never imagined living in fear here ... fear is unfortunately right now on every street corner it seems like. It?s really not, but in our minds, because of this event.?

Another churchgoer, 18-year-old Scott Shreffler, said he took encouragement from the lyrics of a song that was sung during the service: ?greater things have yet to come and greater things are still to be done in this city.?

?This summer has been very tough on Colorado,? he said, adding that he felt the presence of God while he was singing, telling him that ?it's going to be alright and good things are going to come out of this.?

When asked by a reporter what he told people, such as those directly affected by the tragedy, to help them through this difficult time, Noble, the minister, said ?the most important thing right now is just to listen, hug and pray.?

?It's not anywhere near the time to start coming in and being a theologian and giving theological ? arguments on different things,? Noble said.

?Unfortunately, the storms come to every person, whether they?re great followers of God or never darkened the door of a church ? the storms of life happen to all of us.?

AS: We have a few wonderful things on this new season. We test a World War I myth about trenches. Apparently, Germans dug their trenches in very sharp, precise, right-angled arrangements because that prohibited the propagation of blast-pressure waves. And we did my favorite small-scale experiments we?ve ever done, and then we did it full-scale up in gold country.

JH: We got an extend-reach forklift, a big one, and had the high-speed camera above the trenches looking down, so you actually see the explosion start from one end of the trench and the fireball travel down the trench and start to make it around the corner. It?s a shot that we?ve never seen before. The explosion makes it further in one case than another and kind of dissipates. It?s wonderful footage.

AS: We also do a public-service story on airplane boarding?what is the most and least efficient way to board an airplane. This, I hope, will really change some things for the better. The results we came up with are absolutely surprising.

What else? Oh! The internet went nuts a few weeks ago with the idea that Rose maybe could have let Jack on her piece of wood at the end of Titanic. I got tweeted that picture 15,000 times?people saying you have to test this! So Jamie and I did some scale testing, then we put on Mustang cold water survival suits and got into San Francisco Bay with a scaled piece of wood and crawled all over it. We also did some of the most advanced hypothermia testing we?ve ever tried on the show with a totally new kind of testing dummy and came up with some absolutely surprising results that are totally confirmed by the scientific literature we had read up on. That was really thrilling.

JH: We built a dummy with a circulatory system that we calibrated to a human?s, and as far as I know, that?s never been done before. It?s pretty advanced, and we were able to bring something that had the same metabolism and heat as a human all the way to death from exposure. That?s something you can?t do any other way. You can extrapolate it or take historical data, but you can only get some data points and assume that it?s going to go there. We actually took it there. We can make thermo-boy die as many times as we want.

An Unlikely Friendship, 60 Years Apart | Psychology Today

Erin Knauer and Chandran Kaimal participated in the Digital Life History Project at Colgate University. Here is Erin's moving account of the strong inter?generational and cross?cultural friendship that emerged from this project, and Chandran's response. Dear Meika,

When I first met Chandran, I saw a kind little old man, who seemed a bit shy and willing but embarrassed to open up to me. He couldn't really fathom why I was interested in hearing his story. During graduation he touched on this, saying that he had resigned/expected no surprises to come in his old age, that he would not develop such a close relationship since he had formed them all when younger. And this ended up not being the case with our close friendship, which has broadened to include my family.

Our first conversation consisted of a broad overview of his life, and the more I learned, the more fascinated I was. I think the real reason behind this is that I am the daughter of a Colombian immigrant who came to this country with nothing, and eventually, with hard work, made something of herself? a rags to riches kind of story. So I felt we immediately had this base connection, something by which he could understand me, in terms of my identity, (cultural), much better then anyone else I know.

I've listened to all my mom's stories my entire life (occasionally unwillingly), and I love them. Chandran's stories were very similar in many regards. He told me about his continuous struggles to assimilate, the sacrifice of leaving your family behind for your own prosperity/path, and about his close bond to his children and what he carried from his culture and traditions to them.

From the first session, we talked for hours, finding more similarities in his and my Mother's stories, comparing their experiences living the American life/dream, and how they raised their children. He could truly understand my perspective on things, my sense of belonging to no place or culture, calling three separate countries home, feeling like an outsider amongst 'my own' people, and he could see how that lead me to study anthropology.

The more I talked with him, the more I wanted to see him and spend time with him, since he was an escape from school and gave me guidance. In this way he took on a grandfather role, and he considers me one of his granddaughters. This resulted in a kind of mutual helping and counseling, where he helped me de?stress and begin to believe in myself, and I helped by listening and, on a few occasions, giving him my perspective on something that troubled him. And we usually did all this talking over dinner, which made it even more special and made it feel more like I was coming home when I walked through their door.

In the following semesters we made it a point to meet at least once each time, so we could catch up and he could hear about how I was doing with school. I really wanted him to meet my family, especially my mom, and so the last night I spent at Hamilton before heading home, Chandran and his wife Lorraine invited my parents and I to their house for dinner. My mom and Chandran traded stories over what I had told each about the other, which was quite fun to hear. They also compared their immigrant stories and exchanged perspectives they developed through living as Americans and having families here.

I asked Chandran if he would come to my graduation, for which he most graciously agreed, and so when I came back in May, I came back early and stayed stayed at his house. That gave us a little time to catch up, and in the evening my parents and sister arrived and we enjoyed another wonderful dinner. My sister also hit it off with him and she now corresponds with him, in regards to cooking Indian food. And so our family bond grows!

I look to Chandran as a comforting, kind, and understanding figure who I can talk to about anything. My grandparents died when I was little, so he has replaced/represents them in my eyes. I love the wisdom he imparts so willingly to me, and that fatherly love he has bestowed on me, and I'm so thankful I was lucky enough to receive it.

I hope this answers your questions and please let me know if you have any more. Sorry I made this so long, but I feel this is the least I can write to give an honest description of our relationship. I will keep in touch and let you know how things work out for me. Until then, please continue those life history interviews, because us students need to slow down and listen to the wise from time to time!

Dear Meika,

Thank you for sending me Erin's thoughtful and affectionate story of our friendship. She has explained very well how our age difference, 60 years, and cultural factors, like my Indian background, worked in our favor. We could find common ground and lots of reasons to like each other. On my part I quickly found I could relate to her as easily as I do with my daughters and granddaughters.

Erin's narrative is direct and unsentimental, but I cannot read it without being struck by her kind portrayal of me. True, I too view her with similar affection. It is amazing we could get there in the short time we had to interact. What we didn't expect was how rapidly the friendship expanded to include Erin's parents, her sister Heather, and my wife, Lorraine.
