Early detection is key to breast cancer survival | VOXXI

Read related: US supporters rally as breast screening grants cut

As my fingers unclasp my white satin bra I feel the chill of the cold air in the room against my skin. The chill sends a nervous sensation up my spine and I can visualize the facial expressions of those middle-aged women in the waiting room who looked me up and down when I walked in. I am sure they wondered what I was doing there, since I am only 34.

They may imagine I?m here to keep my mom company. Yet, I am by myself. I stand alone, with the same fears, concerns, and unease they have, which fully overcomes me in the mammogram room.

My mother?s legacy: breast cancer

What these women don?t know is that I have been here before. I have been here with my mom, when at the young age of 47 she was faced with the cancer that led to her mastectomy. My family and I were by her side when she faced it with strength and determination. I recall the day she told my siblings and me that a part of her would be removed. My answer was, ?I love you with or without breasts.?

What I didn?t tell her was that I was scared, I feared not having her in my life and losing her to her fight against cancer.

Mammograms are a must for me now

Every time I undergo a mammogram, all of these thoughts run through my mind: the reality that cancer has no age, no gender, and no color. According to the information provided in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website, it is the most common type of cancer in Hispanic/Latina women. I started having regular mammograms when a few years ago I had a lump and a biopsy. It turned out to be nothing, but because of my mom?s history, I need to screen more often than other women my age.

Early detection is key

There are steps to help reduce the risk of course. But, what many don?t realize is that cancer can happen to anyone and it can take a life in a short time or even at a more excruciating, slower pace.

Breast self-exams can aid in early detection / Photo: Shutterstock

I understand the fear of the women in the waiting room, and of anyone who has come in contact with this deadly disease; the thought of the unknown, of that machine invading your body and yet determining what just might be. I can?t even look while the exam is taking place.

You try and make friendly conversation as someone you have never seen before touches you in places that only an intimate companion would. As a person who has seen this disease take over the body of a loved one, I brush off those thoughts and know this is all for a good cause. Many cancers are undetected due to failing to do a self- exam or not following up with annual appointments.

I did my part. The rest is beyond my control

The images of the women in the waiting room cross my mind again as I walk out of the clinic. The intense look of worry on their faces, and the thought of them waiting for days for word from their doctor. Will they be diagnosed? Will they survive? Will they be as lucky as my mom, who is alive and well, as she undergoes yearly mammograms? Or will they die, as my dad did, 12 years ago, of colon cancer ?

What I do know is that I walk out comfortable and strong knowing that I have done my part, and whatever else happens from here on, is beyond my control.

What steps will you take to become more aware of any type of cancer?

Obama's Budget Offers Mixed News for Small Business Owners

President Obama?s proposed 2013 budget seeks to reduce the federal deficit to $901 billion. He seeks to achieve this goal by increasing taxes on ?the wealthy? ? households making more than $250,000. The goal is to alleviate the deficit over the next ten years by bringing an additional $1.5 trillion into government coffers.

obama

Big deficits lead to higher taxes, which are a drain on enterprise, particularly small business. However, many small business owners pay taxes on their profits at the individual level. An annual income of $250,000 may initially seem like a lot of money, but in places like the New York, Boston and San Francisco metropolitan areas, it doesn?t necessarily qualify you as ?rich.?

The good news for smaller companies is that President Obama has proposed a 3 percent increase in the Small Business Administration (SBA) budget, raising it to $949 million. The bulk of the money will go toward subsidizing government-guaranteed loans to small businesses. Without a greater government subsidy, the SBA would have to increase fees on borrowers and lenders, a move that could stymie the fragile economy.

Although the president is suggesting a $16 billion cap on the size of the SBA?s flagship 7(a) loan program ? lower than the current $17.5 billion cap ? the agency would received an additional $7 million for an entrepreneurship training program for veterans. However, the SBA would have to reduce funding for its other counseling programs, including its nationwide network of Small Business Development Centers. These centers have proven valuable to the growth of small businesses. I believe this cut is a mistake.

The President has also proposed a $8 billion Community College to Career Fund that could bolster entrepreneurship. This collaborative effort between the Department of Labor and the Department of Education would train more workers for jobs in growing industries and offer a six-week online course to help create up to 500,000 new entrepreneurs, as well as a six-month entrepreneurship training program available to 100,000 small-business owners. New government programs usually come with bureaucracy. It remains to be seen whether this initiative will make a difference.

Additionally, the budget offers a 2013 tax credit that gives small businesses adding jobs and wages a tax cut equal to 10 percent of wages added up to $500,000. The tax credit would be available only to employers with fewer than 50 full-time workers.

Important LPN Training Program Requirements | Treasured Articles

If you wish to pursue a career in medical care sector, knowing about the basic needs to be accepted for a training program or degree will help you get started on the right foot.

Academic Requirements for LPN

Firstly , there are a number of documents that you need to submit before you enroll to any LPN training program. Documents like your high school degree or GED should be submitted with your application for admissions at the LPN college of your choice. You need to also submit transcripts and certificates of any advanced courses you have taken.

Do not make assumptions that you are not required to submit those documents to attend online training programme. This is a standard process. It?s of no significance whether or not you are enrolling at a technical, vocational or community college in your neighborhood or taking online classes.

Since there is growing demand for nursing pros and limited slots per class, being admitted to a LPN training program is a competitive business. Often LPN training institutions maintain a small class size to ensure students get enough one on one training by the teacher, especially during talents and technique building.

Important LPN Requirements

There are more LPN degree requirements to think about as well before enrolling at a particular training programme. Some LPN schools prefer admitting students who have taken up one or two general college courses such as English, Mathematics and Sciences.

If you have earned educational credits particularly for science courses like biology, anatomy, physiology and chemistry, it?ll be very helpful to you. The credits you have earned will enable you to take a preliminary exam to determine whether or not you need to keep studying those courses together with your LPN programme.

Once enrolled, you are required to complete the theoretical and clinical portions of the LPN training to qualify for certification. If you?re taking an online program, ensure that the programme makes arrangements for you to gain clinical experience at some type of health-care facility, or make arrangements for the internship by yourself, which is a vital component in LPN training.

There are several online lpn programs offered by numerous schools and colleges. If you would like to get more opportunities in this medical field, we suggest you to learn more about lpn to bsn programs.

Video: Romney campaigns across Michigan

>>> it's do or die time for the republican presidential candidates in michigan . rick santorum and mitt romney are making the rounds with voters there today. our first reports romney loss in michigan could throw this republican primary into an all out tail spin . both candidates are working to overcome some gaffes from the weekend.

>> obama once said he wants everybody many america to go to college. what a snob. i understand why he wants you to go to college. he wants to remake you in his image.

>> i can't be perfect. i just am who i am. if people think there's something wrong with being successful in america, then they better vote for the other guy.

>> joining me now to talk about it michael smerconish who is also an msnbc contributor, bill ballinger . thank you for being with me this afternoon. bill, i want to start with you because you know michigan politics better than most. what are you hearing on the ground right now in your state? who has the edge right now?

>> well, mitt romney 's momentum was seem to be building at the end of last week has stopped, and may be rolling backwards. right now it looks like a jump ball tomorrow. the momentum might even be mildly in santorum 's favor.

>> what do you attribute that slowed momentum?

>> there are a variety of factors. you have to look at the money. who is spending what on what. santorum has automated robo calls going into homes. i got one an hour ago myself making it sound like it's coming from the democrats saying cross over and vote in the republican primary . if you listen all the way to the end of it, it's paid for by rick santorum . that is the kind of stuff that's going on here. a lot of subterranean hanky panky .

>> mitt romney seems be demonstrating an inability or unwillingness to connect with blue collar voters there. we know there's $374,000, not much to receive in speaking females. last week it was his wife. he has ann had a few cadillacs. over the weekend, he said this, and i want to put it up on the screen for folks to read. this is what he said. he was down there, the big nascar race, quote, not as close as some of the most ardent fans, but i have some great friends who are nascar team owners. has mitt romney changed his strategy, michael smerconish . is he saying i'm rich, i'm successful, deal with it and vote for me any way.

>> craig, i don't think any one of these statements alone is worth our conversation, but when you put them together, because there's been a whole series of them, then it fosters this narrative of him being a, a wealthy guy but, b, a very detached guy. i don't think it's deliberate. i think this is who he is. i think it's going to build as we held toward november if he survive, and it's going to be a real problem for him to connect with folks that are struggling in this economy.

>> if he does end up winning the republican nomination, is mitt romney going to be able to move back to the middle and pick up independent voters?

>> i think it's going to be very difficult. they are all out now flexing their beer muscles on their conservative credentials in michigan . the statements by senator santorum wanting to vomit by hearing that 1960s speech by j.f.k., there's nothing in there to vomit. to pull back and go after independents, politico shows how obama is hammering romney . they can win the battle, but probably lose the war unless they change.

>> i want to play a bit of sound here. this is rick santorum talking -- this is him explaining on "meet the press" the snobbery stuff about the president wanting everyone to go to college. listen.

>> i encourage my kids to get higher education , absolutely. in fact, if college is the best place for them, absolutely. you know what, if going to a trade school and learning to be a carpenter or plumber or other types of skills that are artists, whatever the case may be or musician, all of those things are very important and who while professions that we should not look down our nose at and say they are less because you didn't get a four-year college degree .

>> who is his audience here?

>> well, he is speaking to very conservative republicans in the base of the party who cannot stand president obama . many of them are evangelical voters that he is hoping are strongly resisting mitt romney , will carry him to a victory in michigan and blow this race wide open . he's well positioned in ohio. he's looking at a window of ten days where he needs to take michigan and then go onto sweep super tuesday and really knock romney right off the rail. he needs to build a coalition of strong supporters, but he has done himself a world of hurt as michael smerconish has mentioned in others in these past couple of days where he had a surge that was building and now it's run straight into a wall. he's gotten some stability back in michigan . if rick santorum loses in michigan , i think it's going to be because republican primary voters there decided because of what he's saying that he cannot win in november.

>> do you think santorum wins tomorrow in michigan ?

>> i really don't know how this is going to go. it will probably depend on how many democratshis hanky panky .

>> bill, who wins tomorrow?

>> i've been saying romney would pull it out, but i've got real doubts.

>> michael smerconish , i need you to pick a candidate.

>> romney . if he loses tomorrow, but if we are back to square one if he loses.

>> thank you so much.

>> thank you.

>> tomorrow, stay with msnbc for live coverage of super tuesday. prime time coverage will start 8:00 eastern on msnbc.

Home Improvement | Home Storage- Necessary or Are we Just a ...

Making our homes as fashionable and as comfortable as possible is what most homeowners are hoping to achieve. The most recent trend among budding interior designers is to have your home as minimalistic as possible, creating the ?less is more impact? for everyone to enjoy.

So what do we do with all our belongings that we just can?t bare to throw away but will probably use only once every so often if at all?

That is the question, many of us keep things with the justification that we will use it again in the future and the chances are they will just sit unattended for the next five years. But throwing things out for the sake of it, or if they are in perfect working order, in many people?s eyes, is a crime!

So we have to think of ways to keep everything we want to keep as well as keeping our homes tidy and looking good.
We shouldn?t feel guilty about wanting to keep everything right down to the last used tissue should we; it is, after all, ours!

It has been said that we are a nation of hoarders and some have gone so far as to say that hoarding is an illness rather than just wanting to keep our worldly possessions, so how do we do this while keeping our homes modern I hear you ask.

There are many solutions to home storage, for example making use of garage space efficiently is often an area many people overlook. Garage storage kits are an excellent way to make use of your space, while keeping your garage free from clutter they can help you keep the things that are most important to you.

They are so simple to use, by hanging things from the walls using specialist garage storage kits, there is no easier way to fuel your hoarding habit.

But forget about hoarding, we can apply the same principle for everyday household items that could be stored out of sight and in the garage. Things such as children?s toys or sports equipment can be hung from the walls of your garage, leaving it free for what it?s meant to be used for- a car!

There are so many options when it comes to finding the right storage solutions and many companies offer different sizes and styles that means keeping your home tidy whilst hoarding everything you own, can even look fashionable, even in the smallest of spaces.

So what if you don?t have a garage, garage storage kits can be used in any space in any room to help with your habit!
Hanging old clothes and personal possessions using one of the kits inside the home is a great way to create space.
However you decide to keep your things, storing in a safe way is essential so making sure you buy the right units for the weight of your things should be the most important factor to consider.

(AP) ? A suspect in the shooting death of a Washington State trooper during a traffic stop early Thursday shot himself hours later as a SWAT team closed in, authorities said.

Joshua Jearl Blake was the registered owner of a pickup truck that Trooper Tony Radulescu pulled over just before he was shot to death early Thursday, and the ex-con was also known to law enforcement in the area for meth convictions, assaulting the mother of one of his children and kicking out the window of a police car.

Investigators tracked Blake to a home near Port Orchard where he shot himself as a SWAT team closed in. He was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where authorities say he died.

Radulescu stopped the truck around 1 a.m. on Highway 16 near Gorst, about 20 miles west of Seattle across Puget Sound. He had radioed the location and license plate number, said Trooper Russ Winger.

When Radulescu didn't respond to dispatcher status checks, a Kitsap County sheriff's deputy went to the scene and found the fatally wounded trooper outside his patrol car. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma where he was declared dead.

Three hours later, officers found the truck abandoned on a county road near Port Orchard, about two miles from the shooting scene.

Investigators received a tip on where to find the registered owner and went to the home.

"As our SWAT team made their approach they heard a single gunshot," Kitsap County sheriff's Sgt. Ken Dickinson said. "They found a male subject with a single gunshot wound."

Radulescu, 44, was a 16-year veteran of the Washington State Patrol who served his entire career in the patrol's Bremerton district.

He was a military veteran with a son in the area who is a soldier, Patrol Chief John Batiste said at an early morning news conference at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was well-known and popular in the community where he often spoke in schools, Batiste said.

"It's a terrible thing to receive a phone call that one of your people is injured in line of duty. To have that compounded with a loss, it's a bad day," Patrol Chief John R. Batiste.

The chief has been consoling family and members of agency.

"They're all hurting. I'm hurting," Batiste said.

An aid car carrying Radulescu's body was escorted by dozens of patrol cars with lights flashing from the hospital to the Pierce County medical examiner's office where the autopsy would be conducted.

Boyer is a former 27-year veteran of the patrol and knew Radulescu well.

Radulescu was an immigrant from Romania who spoke five languages ? a tremendous asset in the patrol's investigations of auto theft rings with Eastern European connection, Boyer said.

Radulescu was wonderfully personable, he said.

"He could write somebody a ticket and they'd say thank you," Boyer said.

The death was the first of a trooper on duty in 13 years.

Troooper James Saunders, 31, who was shot in 1999 during a traffic stop in Pasco. Nicolas S. Vasquez pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

World News - Red Cross says negotiating pause to fighting in Syria ...

A Free Syrian Army fighter stands guard in Idlib in northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border, on Sunday.

By msnbc.com news services

GENEVA -- The International Committee of the Red Cross says it is negotiating with Syrian authorities and opposition fighters to broker a cease-fire in some of the most violence-torn areas.

"We are currently discussing several possibilities with all those concerned, and it includes a cessation of fighting in the most affected areas," Red Cross spokeswoman Carla Haddad told The Associated Press.

She said the talks weren't aimed at resolving entrenched political differences, but to allow the humanitarian agency enough time to deliver aid to civilians hardest hit by the conflict.

"The idea is to be able to facilitate swift access to people in need," Haddad said.

Activists in embattled cities such as Homs say food is running out and doctors lack medicine to treat the wounded.

?Cut off from the outside world?
Opposition activists said five people had been killed in government shelling of Homs's Baba Amro district on Monday, adding to a reported death toll of several hundred since the operation began there on February 3.

Activists in the western city of Hama said troops, police and militias had set up dozens of roadblocks, cutting neighborhoods off from each other.

"Hama is cut off from the outside world. There are no landlines, no mobile phone network and no Internet. House-to-house arrests take place daily and sometimes repeatedly in the same neighborhoods," an opposition statement said.

Rebel fighters have been attacking militiamen, known as shabbiha, while avoiding open confrontations with the armored forces that had massed around Hama, a city north of Homs on the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

The government restricts foreign media access in Syria, making it hard to verify the activists' reports independently.

In a bold protest in Damascus, opposition youths unfurled a pre-Assad era national flag over a road bridge at the edge of the capital, YouTube footage showed. That followed a weekend that saw one of the biggest demonstrations yet in the capital as the uprising neared its first anniversary.

Security forces have killed more than 5,000 people, according to human rights groups, in a campaign to crush the revolt while the Assad government says more than 2,000 soldiers and security agents have been killed.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Strauss Under Fire for Extreme Pricing - Yeshiva World News

With Israel?s cottage cheese protests all but forgotten, the consumer public is targeting Strauss-Elite, the second largest company in Israel, unwilling to accept what is perceived as price gouging. Organizers of the grassroots protest point out that it is simply unacceptable that here in Israel, where the products are manufactured, we pay significantly more than shoppers in North America.

The company?s stock reacted negatively to the announced consumer boycott, closing down 3.5%.

This effort began a number of days ago with a photograph of the popular ?Pesek Zman? candy bar on Facebook, a chocolate bar selling in New Jersey for 74 cents (2.6 NIS) while in Israel, it sells for 6.3 NIS.

Strauss officials tried to defend the report, stating the prices in N. America are determined locally, not by the company, and there are sales now ahead of Purim.

Whatever the case, it appears the new consumer boycott is underway and it will be up to Strauss to make the next move.

How to Promote Your Business with an Online Contest | Website ...

So you have a website up and running. But you won?t be selling anything if the crowds don?t come. How do you get the crowds to come by your website without paid advertising?

Try running a contest!

Besides helping you promote your business, running a contest enables you to collect details about your prospects! After all, those who participate in the contest must somehow be interested in your prizes, right?

Organising a contest is an indirect way to get more information about your prospects. Once you have their emails in hand, you can contact them when you have promotions, discounts, giveaways, freebies and goodies directly.

Yes, running a contest is one of the many ways you can draw the crowd, especially if you offer your products as contest prizes. But what if you don?t have any products to offer as prizes? No problem! If you run a consultancy, offer your services as the prize. Yet, if you feel that you need to offer something tangible, you could try partnering with other businesses to offer prizes related to your business.

To run a successful contest, here are five important things to remember.

1. What?s In It For Me?

Those who join your online contest are in it for one thing: self-interest. What benefit will they derive from joining your contest? Give them a can?t-say-no reason. This means offering them a contest prize that they simply cannot refuse. The key thing is: never give them a product that is mediocre or worthless. People are not stupid so do not take them for a ride by offering something that you, yourself would not use or buy. Think like your customer: does this prize get me excited if I win? If you can?t even get yourself hyped up about the prize, it?s time to re-think.

2. How Long Does It Run?

Next, determine the duration of the contest. Some run for a month, some run for three. The disadvantages of running a contest longer than a month is that participants? attention will falter and soon, your contest may be forgotten. A shorter duration may be a good bet sometimes. Again, this depends on how confident you are of your prize and how much attention you?ll expect it?ll garner.

3. Brainstorm For Ideas

Now that you have the prize and duration settled, think about how to present your contest. What type are you looking at? Now?s a good time to brainstorm and decide how simple or complicated you want it to be. Do

you want your participants to write a slogan? Do you want your participants to hunt for some information on your website? Again, as the organiser, it?s your call. Based on our experience, give something in between ? not too complex to stump them and drive them off, nor something too easy that insults their intelligence.

4. Design The Contest

Finally, it is time to put the contest to work by designing the necessary web pages and forms (if applicable). How do you want the participants to send their entries in? By email? Or do you need them to fill up a form on your website? Before your contest goes live online, get family members or friends to test out the contest and weed out problems, if any.

Another important tip is to also include a page which sets out the rules and regulations of the contest (you don?t want disgruntled participants, do you?). Be sure you tell them when the contest results will be posted online at your website. Most contest organisers will post contest results on their website as well as send an email to the winners, informing them.

5. Promote It Everywhere

Once the contest is ready, it is time to promote the contest to everyone you know. Naturally, the first place to do so would be on your website. Next, promote it on other websites, on newsgroups, wherever you can stick the contest announcement.

Don?t think only in terms of online promotion. You?d be surprised that offline promotion works too.

At the same time, don?t leave out your existing customers either. Send them an email announcing the contest. Tell them to send or refer the contest to friends and families, especially since you know they?ve bought from you and they know your products well (that is, if you are offering your own product).

The key to any successful online contest is to keep promoting it, even until the deadline itself.

Now that you know how to run a contest, go on, get one organised! It takes some work and needs some creative thinking but it?s fun and helps you promote your business in the most innovative way!

Home ? politics ? Ten more legal brains to advise on charter, ombudsman says

The Nation February 20, 2012 1:00 am

The Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand has appointed 10 advisers to study how to improve the Constitution, an ombudsman said yesterday.

Prawich Ratanapian, one of the three ombudsmen, said the 10 advisers were appointed because the ombudsmen were required by Article 244 of the Constitution to evaluate charter enforcement and provide advice on how to improve the charter.

Since the Parliament is about to deliberate charter amendment bills, the ombudsmen took the chance to appoint the advisers.

They include four legal experts - Prof Noraniti Setthabutr, former chairman of the 2007 Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA); Prof Dr Wissanu Krua-ngarm, former deputy prime minister; Dr Bowornsak Uwanno, secretary-general of King Prachadipok's Institute; and Prof Dr Surapol Nitikraipot, former rector of Thammasat University.

Four of the advisers are experts in political science - Prof Dr Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, rector of National Institute of Development Administration; Prof Dr Thiraphat Serirangsan, former PM's Office minister and political science lecturer of Sukhothai Thammathirat University; and Prof Dr Jaras Suwanmala, former dean of Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Political Science and former member of the 2007 CDA.

Prawich said the two other advisers are lawyers - Prof Dr Prinya Thewanarumitkul, vice rector of Thammasat, and Assoc Prof Dr Kittisak Porakati, a law lecturer of Thammasat.

Prawich said the ombudsmen had no conflict with politicians, who have sponsored charter amendment bills.

He said the advisers would compare the 1997 and 2007 charters for drawbacks and strong points and would study proposals of various groups on charter amendments to try to provide reasonable solutions for Thai society.

He said the opinions of the advisers of the ombudsman would be neutral in line with the constitutional requirement on the ombudsman.

He said members of the public could post their opinions on charter amendments for the advisers to study on the website at www.ombudsman.go.th.

Prawich said the 10 advisers would convene their first meeting at 10am on February 29.

Meanwhile, Parliament is scheduled to start considering the charter amendment on Thursday. There are three drafts of the amendment: the Cabinet version, the Pheu Thai

version and the Chartthai Pattana

version.

Friday Roundtable: Reappropriating "Gamer": The Discussion ...

Posted by Declan Burrowes on Friday, February 17, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Gamers United

?Anyone who identifies as a ?gamer? will create a very specific image in the mind of the layman,? wrote Ben ?Yahtzee? Croshaw in August 2010. ?Probably something somewhere between one of the Columbine killers and that shouty German kid from YouTube. Or a sweaty, fat, neckbearded manchild weeping over their Aeris body pillow.? Croshaw ended his article with a plea: stop using the word.

At the beginning of last year, BNBGAMING?s Armand Kossayan wrote a response which called not for damnation and abandonment of the the g-word, but ?reappropriation?, a proactive takeback of a term that to many is nothing more than a shaming pejorative. It inspired some interesting discussion in the comments, and this week, the Friday Roundtable panel takes up the mantle and shares its thoughts on ?empowering? the gaming man and woman. Do we need to reappropriate? Is ?gamer? really such a tainted word? If it is, what can be done to help?

Writing this week are Armand Kossayan, PC/Indie correspondent, to defend his original work; Isaac Hammer, Japanese affairs correspondent; Declan Burrowes, European Managing Editor; and Martin Watts, Editor-in-Chief.

As always, we welcome and encourage your comments and discussion in the section below.

* ?* ?* ?*

Not helpful.

Armand:

A year ago I wrote about the idea of reappropriating?the term ?gamer??so that it no longer had the negative?connotation?that it has held. We?ve long subscribed to an image of the gamer as an angry, unattractive, overweight male, possibly living in his mother?s basement; an unfortunate stereotype that helps no one, and is only used as a bludgeoning tool to hurt and?mischaracterize?everyday people.

This was in response to an article written by Yahtzee over at the Escapist, wherein he argued that we should just do away with the term entirely since it was so tarnished. My feeling was that ?gamer? was too entrenched in our collective vocabulary to be dropped entirely; thus the need to reappropriate it into something more positive. Essentially, that we needed to make
?gamer? no different than terms that describe respectable hobbies or professions such as athlete, artist, or doctor (okay, maybe doctor is going a bit too far).

I also argued that there wasn?t much we needed to do to make this happen. As gaming becomes more and more commonplace?among?the people of the Western world, it is normalized and loses some of its more negative meanings.

A year after writing that article, I already feel like we?ve come a long way in making this happen.

In Japan, playing video games defies labelling. (Photo credits: TokyoTimes.org)

Isaac:

As far as reappropriating??gamer? goes, I see it as a non-issue for the simple fact of diffusion. Where gaming was once a niche hobby, the number of people who have never played a portable or home console, much less games on their mobile phone, is so utterly minute that among my generation the question isn?t ?do you play games?? but rather ?what games do you play?? ?Simply put, just playing video games doesn?t make one a gamer.

On that note, gamer as a term has already morphed away from the basement-dwelling, acne-ridden, eternally teenaged nerd, and is more likely to conjure up images of angry, ultra-competitive FPS players.

Here in Japan, where portable consoles are aimed at everyone from ages 5-95, there isn?t even a word for someone who plays games, unless they take it to an obsessive extreme.

I honestly foresee the Western world falling into the same way of thought just for the wide usage and enjoyment of games. For us, and those younger, video games are not, and will not, be a strange thing, but just another part of our everyday life, receiving no more thought than the other forms of entertainment we enjoy.

Declan:

It?s a tough one, though I?m more inclined to side with Isaac. ?Gamer? is a term that I think has long surpassed its usefulness, if it was ever useful at all. We don?t call people with a passion or enthusiasm or even a like for films and music ?filmers? or ?musickers?, and with so many people playing video games today, gamer is equally unnecessary.

But while I agree that more people play games in 2012 than ever before, I think this is down to easy access to smartphones, F2P MMOs and Facebook, not more women and old folks picking up Call of Duty and Mass Effect. Those who take a keen interest in the games industry ? those who might regularly read a video game website, for example ? would, I imagine, still be regarded as a different breed of ?gamer? entirely by those who spend their lunch breaks or evenings with Angry Birds, FarmVille, or the Wii. Call me insecure, but even today I don?t feel comfortable bringing up my gaming habits in polite company. It still carries with it an unpleasant aura of ?oh, at?your?age??. One can extol the virtues of their latest cinema trip or album purchase to their heart?s content and no doubt inspire discussion, but games continue to baffle the non-initiated and conjure up images of immaturity, and the industry?s delight in perpetuating unhelpful advertisements (Modern Warfare 3?s ?A Soldier in All of Us? and Dead Space 2?s ?Your Mom Hates This Game? campaigns spring to mind) laden with pyrotechnics and stereotypes do nothing to advance the medium or its adherents.

EA marketed the gory horror game Dead Space 2 as "the game your mom hates". It received venomous backlash from the online world, indicating a serious lack of understanding between larger publishers and the gaming public.

Isaac:

So, thus it is that gamer is fine, or on its way there, but the very connotation of games as something for children, as a phase we should ?grow out of?, is what we need to address?

Taking it non-digital for a minute, the comics industry faced the same issue. As the original fans grew from childhood to adulthood, rather than throw aside something they loved, there was a demand for change within the industry to suit the new desires of the market. Indeed, this has been and continues to occur within gaming, as different genres and companies tend to specialize.

That, and eliminate the marketing departments. Mom doesn?t approve, indeed.

Is this man a "gamer" even if his playing habits equate to a few minutes of Brain Training or Tetris a day? (Photo credits: AsOurParentsAge.net)

Martin:

Games clearly have matured with us though, taking into account that this actually began in the late nineties with titles like Resident Evil, GoldenEye 007 and Tomb Raider. So, yes, I believe it?s undoubtedly the way in which games are perceived which is in dire need of change.

Like Dec, I?ve?received the odd raised eyebrow when people learn that I write about video games. But again, I think such a response is borne out of a lack of understanding or knowledge, not to mention that when I was growing up, video games were seen (and still are by many) as a waste of time, or an instrument through which murderers and rapists were being created.

I think starting with Nintendo and the Wii, and the subsequent motion-controlled rivals that followed, that the industry is slowly but surely changing that perception. It is now very normal for those ten years younger than me to have an evening of Call of Duty multiplayer, whereas ten years ago I was probably viewed as obsessive. This opening up of games to a wider audience may not bring in a new demographic to the likes of Skyrim?or Street Fighter, but it does at least provide ?non-gamers? with an idea of why ?gamers? like to play games.

Declan:

Video games need time. To me the issue is simply a natural generational gap that will cease to exist once our children raised on video games mature and produce children of their own raised in a world even more familiar with them. While games have been around since the 1970s, as Martin says, it really only has been the last ten to fifteen years in which they have developed more complex narratives with well-written and well-imagined characters, plots and settings, and an even shorter time still since games have seriously entered the public eye. In that regard, the 2010s may well be the industry?s most exciting decade yet in terms of wider appeal and diversification.

That said, I can?t see the 75-year-old technophile making the jump from?Tiny Wings?on his iPad to gushing about the latest?Team Fortress 2?hats on the Steam discussion boards anytime soon.?As I said, while gaming may be welcoming more people than ever before, these late arrivals are landing in territory unfamiliar to most ?hardcore? gamers, that still suspiciously eyed world of social and casual games. They?re a separate market entirely, and what better evidence for that than the mass appeal of Nintendo?s Wii and DS systems?

I think any effort to actively ?reappropriate? the term gamer would be misguided and a waste of energy. Like Isaac, I foresee the word falling out of use altogether in years to come; it will ultimately be rendered meaningless when everyone and their dog has a game-playing device of some kind ? ?it?s already happened in Japan. Let the old fogies rattle on about the alleged brain-rotting abilities of Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty, just as the same old fogies raged about the internet, cinema and photography once upon a time. (They?ll all be dead soon, anyway.)

Armand:

We could be waiting a while before discussing Valve's design philosophy and RTS strategies makes polite dinner party conversation.

Jumping back a bit in the conversation, there is a difference in all hobbies between the casual?participant, the?enthusiast, and the obsessive. Everyone likes movies to some degree. Some people watch lots of movies, and a smaller group take it the an entirely different level. And we do have a term for them. They?re film buffs, and though they aren?t looked upon with outright disdain, an outsider might still think it?s a bit abnormal. I think you could say that for most hobbies and interests though. Anyone who gets more into it than the bulk of their peers is likely to be viewed a bit?differently, and that will always apply for any interest, including gaming. People who are as ?obsessed? as we are aren?t ever going to be the norm, but someone who owns a console, and plays maybe 5-10 hours a week is still a gamer, just a more ?normal? one.

As far as feeling less than comfortable about bringing up your gaming interests though, I think that?s an important thing to address. Maybe you get an odd look when you mention that you?re an?enthusiast?to a gaming outsider, but you also help normalize the term and the concept for them by doing so. Over time, even if they don?t develop their own interest in gaming, they will hopefully start to see things a bit differently. By demonstrating that you aren?t an outdated stereotype, it makes things a little better for the rest of us.

Reappropriation will largely happen with time, and with little effort on our parts. As we?ve all said, it?s already happening. But we can also do little things to help now, whether we?re just more open and transparent about our interests, or we maybe ?gift? a game to our non-gamer buddies, and ask them to play. Frankly though, it is only a matter of time, if not something that has more or less already happened.

Share Your Thoughts:?We?ve shared our thoughts and now it?s your turn. Does the word ?gamer? need to be reappropriated??In your mind, are games perfectly acceptable in cultured society, or are they and their consumers still regarded as childish?
