Former Radio DJ Battles Prostate Cancer ? CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer will survive, but their lives will never be the same.

Michael ?Doughnuts? Wegner did have it good ? enjoying his scenic patch of land in Wisconsin that overlooks the St. Croix River Valley, a loving family, and his great job. In the 80s, Wegner dominated morning radio on the Knapp and Doughnuts show ? rubbing elbows with celebrities like Hulk Hogan and Kenny Rogers.

?All I had to do was get a laugh out of somebody and I was happy,? Wegner said.

His good life was dealt a reality check about a year ago when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

?I don?t like to admit it, but when I drove home that day (makes crying motion with his hands) it was like I felt sorry for myself,? he said. ?I could?ve had the cancer for five years or more they think so we had to do drastic action.?

Michael agreed to have his prostate and bladder removed, followed by chemotherapy.

Dr. Parker Eberwein is the head of urology at HealthPartners. While prostate cancer is very common in aging men, he says many will survive.

?Twenty percent of men are going to be diagnosed with prostate cancer sometime during their life,? Eberwein said.

So why can prostate cancer be fatal and sometimes not?

?Sometimes it can be extremely aggressive. Most of the time fortunately it?s not,? he said. ?We don?t have a perfect test to tell us who will die from the disease and who won?t if we don?t treat them.?

Dr. Eberwein says surgery and chemo can be a hard pill to swallow for patients. Common side effects with surgery are bladder control issues and erectile dysfunction.

Michael says his cancer was so advanced that his focus was on something else.

?You worry more about living,? he said.

His doctors tell Michael he?s now cancer free. After complications with the surgeries he?s on a slow road to recovery, hoping to get back to the good life.

?I just want to feel better, so I can walk to the barn,? he said.

Like so many men, Michael admits he waited too long to see a doctor, and doesn?t want others to make the same mistake.

Michael noticed blood in his urine, and by that time the cancer was fairly advanced.

Doctors recommend getting screened as part of an annual physical at age 40.

PFT: Seahawks CB Sherman denies taking PED

St Louis Rams v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

It sounds like rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley will get another shot? to start for the Cardinals, after his four-interception debut.

But as with all things Cardinals quarterbacks this year, that comes with an asterisk.

Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that Lindley would start again if Kevin Kolb wasn?t healthy, making it reasonable to wonder if John Skelton will ever see the light of day again.

Two of Lindley?s picks were returned for touchdowns in the Cards loss to the Rams, their seventh straight after a 4-0 start.

?Yes. We stay with Ryan,? Whisenhunt said of the non-Kolb condition, via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. Listen, let?s start this thing off by saying you can?t have those interceptions. But in the first half, I thought he did a really nice job. He moved in the pocket, was decisive, managed it, made some good throws. We had three scoring drives in the first half, 17 points and over 200 yards of offense, possession time, was good on third down. I felt that we did a lot of good things, even with the pick-six.

?And the first pick-six, that was a mistake in his read. That can happen. The one in the second half, you have to learn from those. He made a bad decision. That?s what you have to see, can he learn from that? There was nobody more upset about than him, especially after the game. He was torn up because he knows he can?t do that.?

In Arizona he can, because they?re running out of options.

Asked if Kolb might be ready to return from a rib injury this week, Whisenhunt said he wasn?t sure yet.

?I don?t know where Kevin is health-wise,? Whisenhunt said. ?He?s making progress but as far as being ready for a game, that?s something we can?t determine until we see where he is Wednesday.?

Short of Kurt Warner coming back, it?s hard to imagine how any shuffling of the current deck chairs is going to matter that much.

Japan opposition LDP remains election favorite: poll

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is holding its lead ahead of December 16 election, opinion polls showed on Monday, with the hawkish Japan Restoration Party (JRP) led by a nationalist former Tokyo governor coming second.

The Yomiuri daily poll showed that 25 percent of voters would choose the LDP, which is calling for aggressive monetary steps to end deflation, well ahead of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's (DPJ) 10 percent support.

The election for parliament's powerful lower house is unlikely to fix a policy stalemate that has plagued Japan as it struggles with an ageing population, a declining manufacturing sector and the emerging power of China.

Fourteen percent of voters planned to vote for the new Japan Restoration Party, led by 80-year-old Shintaro Ishihara and popular Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto.

Ishihara, the outspoken former Tokyo governor who sparked a territorial row with China with plans to buy a group of disputed islands, was seen as a more suitable government leader than Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, according to Yomiuri's survey.

But LDP opposition leader Shinzo Abe kept his individual lead with 29 percent of voter support.

The election is expected to usher in a period of confusing coalition politics because of the emergence of new parties and because whoever wins will still lack a majority in parliament's upper house, which can block bills.

With many Japanese disillusioned with politics, 37 percent of respondents to the Yomiuri poll said they were undecided. Surveys by other media, the Asahi newspaper and Kyodo news agency, showed similar results.

The DPJ swept to power in 2009 ending more than a half a century of nearly non-stop LDP rule. But its support slumped over what voters saw as broken promises, a confused response to last year's tsunami and nuclear crisis, and Noda's unpopular policies such as a tax hike and the restart of nuclear reactors.

Why 2D Printing Is Like 3D Printing: A Counter Rant

JohnHauerEditor's note: John Hauer is a sales, marketing and technology innovator with a 20+ career of working in print and related industries. He manages a blog which evangelizes 3D printing for traditional 2D printers, and can be found at 3D4printers.com. I recently read an article on TechCrunch by Jon Evans entitled 3D Printers Are Not Like 2D Printers. While I would agree with the title (obviously the two devices don?t serve the same purpose), I don?t agree with the argument Jon makes for why 3D printing is not like 2D printing.

BUSINESS BRIEFS | Aspen Daily News Online

New online food business in the works

Two Redstone residents are planning to launch an online marketplace showcasing the products of some of the finest artisan food producers in North America.

Aspen Valley Foods, which expects to launch operations in late 2013 or early 2014, will be based in Basalt and could employ up to 100 people within five years, according to a press release from company founders Alan Pilkington and Martha Silva. Initially, it will offer over 400 food products in 16 food categories with an emphasis on working with smaller, Colorado-based producers, the release says. All items, from wine to sausage, will be ?source verified,? sustainably produced and quality tested.

Pilkington and Silva, while having secured commitments for much of the start-up capital, are seeking more using the online platform IndieGoGo. For more information about the funding effort, visit www.indiegogo.com/aspenvalleyfoods. For general details about Aspen Valley Foods, check out www.aspenvalleyfoods.com.?

Two Aspen development projects honored

Two Aspen projects have been honored by the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI-USA).?

In the public parks category, the Theatre Aspen tent and pavilion recently installed near the redesigned John Denver Sanctuary in Rio Grande park was honored at a New York City gala last month. Charles Cunniffe Architects worked pro bono on the project.

?The Ski Home,? a? new mansion on Ute Avenue, was recognized in the residential category. Architect Leathem Stearn designed the property, which incorporates technological innovations resulting in a 60 percent reduction in energy use, according to a press release.

Aspen commercial real estate broker Ruth Kruger was recently charged by FIABCI with establishing its U.S. awards, and was on-hand in New York to make the presentations.

The first hit computer game, Pong, is 40 years old | The Sun |Fun ...

COMPUTER gaming really has grown up - as classic arcade title Pong turns 40 this week.

The first commercially successful video game in history, it arrived in US arcades on November 29 1972, and immediately became a huge hit.

The tennis simulator saw players using paddles to knock a ball across the screen, with the action speeding up as the game progressed.

Originally created for games company Atari by designer Allan Alcorn as part of a training exercise, it proved so enjoyable that a prototype was installed in a California bar.

Seventies Liverpool footballer Steve Heighway plays Pong

Mainstream success ... Seventies Liverpool footballer Steve Heighway plays Pong

And when Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell returned to the bar to find the coin compartment overflowing, he decided to put the game into full production.

It soon enjoyed huge success, with over 19,000 cabinets sold, and a home version released in 1975.

The title has gone on to be updated and remade for almost every console, including the PlayStation, Nintendo DS, and PSP.

It paved the way for the Seventies heyday of the gaming arcades, with 1978's Space Invaders and 1979's Asteroids also huge hits.

MAKERS Atari mark the fortieth birthday of the first hit video game with an enormous version of the title

And to mark its 40th birthday, Atari last week created an enormous version of the game at the Lights Festival in Kansas City, on the side of a 22-storey building.

Guy Cocker, editor of GameSpot UK, said: "While Pong technically wasn't the first video game ever made, it is certainly the one that started the games industry as we know it today."

He added: "Its importance can't be understated - it was the game that launched Atari, was the first game to gain mainstream success both in arcades and the home, and was copied all around the world by companies including Nintendo.

"It's gone on to appear on nearly every games console ever since, and is just as addictive today as it was back in 1972."

Report: Impunity endangers Somalia's journalists

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Somalia's journalists are urging their new government and the international community to help end the impunity they say is contributing to making Somalia one of the world's most dangerous countries to practice journalism.

So far 18 Somali journalists have been killed this year and 44 since 2007.

The National Union of Somali Journalists on Friday said that impunity has become a fundamental problem in Somalia. Journalists in almost every region of the country commonly face harassment, blackmail, arbitrary police detention and, in addition, criminals are hired to suppress them, said the group in a report to mark the International Day to End Impunity, sponsored by the free expression group, IFEX.

"Despite this, the authorities provide no support to journalists, and the perpetrators operate with impunity," the report said. Journalism in Somalia has reached a state of emergency, said the report. None of these crimes are investigated properly, much less prosecuted, despite successive administrations, the report said.

No action has ever been taken following a case of violence against a Somali journalist, the report said.

Journalists are being targeted to silence them from speaking against corruption, violence and violations of human rights by radical Islamist groups, said Somali Journalist Mohamed Bashir Hashi.

"We are on the lookout behind our backs every minute because media is getting lots of enemies in Somalia," said Hashi, a reporter with the local Shabelle radio in Somalia.

Somalia's government should implement judicial reforms that will aid free and fair trials, as well as provide judicial protection for the media and ensure that police adhere to the law, according to the report titled "Impunity: War on Somali Journalists." The international community can assist Somalia's federal government to put in place effective and functional public law and order, the report said.

Somalia has made significant strides politically this year in trying to establish its first functional government to move the country away from its failed state status.

A new interim constitution has been passed, a new parliament was seated and a new president was voted in. Somali elders were tasked with naming the parliament since no election could be held, given the state of security around the country. Parliament in turn elected a new president who named a prime minister, who announced his cabinet earlier this month.

Although Somalia has had transitional administrations since 2004, it has not had a functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a longtime dictator and turned on each other, plunging the impoverished nation into chaos. The transitional governments lacked legitimacy and were accused of corruption.

The parliament last week voted to reduce the Cabinet to 10 members, in a sign Somalia's government may be willing to move away from its corrupt past.

African Union troops have helped to push Islamist extremists called al-Shabab out of all Somalia's major cities, giving the newly elected government a chance to rebuild the country.

The International Federation of Journalist says the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Shabaab has a bloody record of maiming and killing journalists who do not toe their line.

With Hizbul-Islam, another hardline insurgent group, they have in recent years ratcheted up pressure on radio stations, first and foremost to ascertain their authority on what goes on air and, most importantly, to impose Taliban-type commandments on un-Islamic music, ringtones, film and football, said Jim Boumelha, the IFJ president.

Boumelha said September was the bloodiest month as renewed killings of journalists may have been triggered by the recent change of government.

On September 20, suicide bombers blew themselves in a restaurant in Mogadishu killing three journalists and wounding five others. The following day another journalist, Hassan Yusuf Absuge, working for Radio Maanta, was shot dead near his station, Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab claimed that their supporters did it.

"With a new speaker of parliament, a new president and a new cabinet, the Somali journalists and their union expect a new beginning and a fresh commitment to protect journalists and tackle impunity as a priority and to promote the right to free expression," he said.

aurilia strident: deliver wilburn: Why You Should Get Insect Pets for ...

We all know that nature has had millions of years to adapt, and we have 100s of thousands of species on Earth which have adapted to specific niches to exploit what?s available; Life will always find a way. Perhaps, it is for this reason that so many of our technological advances are based on our observations of nature. After all, it?s had quite a head start and adaptation and evolution are a brilliant master of engineering. So much so, that I?d like to make a recommendation for you if you are a parent with a curious child who you?d like some day to grow up and become a top rated engineer amongst the human civilization. My recommendation is this; when considering a pet why not consider an arthropod, or arachnid. Say what ? you ask? Why not get them an exotic type insect? Now you think I?ve totally lost it right. Well, I haven?t and let me explain. In finding an early curiosity and interest in the movements of insects, your child may develop a better sense of engineering our future robotics. You see, nature has already figured out many of the most efficient ways of moving around, and evolution has had a lot more practice at designing things than humans have. Borrowing ideas and concept for engineering from nature makes sense. It?s a good place to start. It is possible to better nature?s designs. In fact, we are already making more efficient solar cells than the photosynthesis process used by the leaves on trees. Now then, did you know that spider?s webs pound for pound are stronger than steel? Did you know that there are beetles species which can live where there is no rain or water by collecting the moisture from the morning dew as it rolls off their backs?Have you ever marveled at the giant ant colonies and how they build their habitat, consider this for a moment. How is it that all these creatures are so highly adapted? What can your child learn from observing them, the way they walk, hunt, operate ? their structure, mobility, strength, etc? There is a lot to be learned and if your child studies these pets and thinks about it, I just bet they?ll come up with future designs which will best the best that mankind has yet to come up with on our own.Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. Maybe I?ve convinced you, maybe I haven?t, but it?s something worth your consideration.

Four Tips for Finicky Dogs | Pets Best Insurance Blog

Picky dog refuses plain dog food.As the saying goes, ?You can lead a horse to water, but you can?t make him drink,? the same holds true for the four-legged members of the family. Dogs often operate on a their own internal hunger cues and getting them to eat regular nutritious meals can be tricky. Watching your pooch skip dinner can be disconcerting, but what can you do and how serious is it?

Any time a normally enthusiastic dog who never skips a meal becomes reluctant to eat or refuses food, consult with your veterinarian. This could be a sign of an underlying illness. Especially if refusing food is accompanied by other clinical signs, prompt veterinary attention is warranted. Pet health insurance is an invaluable tool to ensure your pet gets the top notch care they need!

1. Don?t Create a Monster

Commonly, without meaning to, owners can create a picky-eater by coaxing their dogs to eat when they aren?t hungry. Take this example: Spot ate a Milkbone at 3pm, so he isn?t hungry for her dinner.? Mrs. Jones is concerned that Spot isn?t eating, so she adds a little of her pot roast on top of the kibble. Spot, of course, eats this with enthusiasm! Over time Spot learns that if he ignores his kibble at dinnertime, he will be rewarded with something even tastier from Mrs. Jones? plate.? In essence, Spot is training Mrs. Jones.

2. Picky Eating Leads to Obesity

The problem with this scenario is that is leads to obesity. Recent studies estimate that over half of our pets are overweight; obviously obesity is a growing problem with significant pet health implications. In the above story, Spot wasn?t eating because his body was telling him he wasn?t hungry. The highly desirable food overrode the lack of hunger and thus he overate, leading to weight gain. This creates a vicious cycle of refusing dog food, but eating treats and human food.

3.? Create Healthy Habits in Puppies

Preventing a finicky eater is best started at puppyhood. Get in the habit of feeding regular meals without a lot of snacking or table scraps. Don?t over feed. If food is leftover in the bowl at the end of the day, you are putting too much food in it! Talk with your veterinarian about how much you should be feeding. Often the guidelines on the back of the dog food bags can over estimate how much kibble should be fed. Calorie requirements and metabolism can vary greatly with your dog?s age, breed, lifestyle and level of exercise.

4. Retrain Your Older Dog

An adult dog with a history of finicky eating can be a little more challenging to convert. Especially in situations where the owner has associated feeding treats with love and reward, changing this can be hard. Try to resist using food to equate with love. Instead, have a mini-play session with a favorite toy, or go for a walk and have a cuddle together. Dogs are pretty easy to please! When attempting to convert a picky eater, realize that the first couple weeks will be the hardest. If Roscoe is used to a certain eating arrangement, he will undoubtedly be put off when this changes.

After determining how much kibble your pet should be eating in a day, break this into two meals. Put the first meal down in the morning, allow it to sit out for a period of time, then put it away. Don?t be surprised if he ignores it at first, remember, he is used to getting what he wants!? Then allow access to the pre-measured breakfast again at lunch time, again put it away if he continues to ignore it. At dinnertime, do the same thing. Allow a period of time with the kibble available, then remove it. Try to resist doctoring it,as this reinforces he refusal of plain food. Over time she will learn that if she doesn?t eat her meals when you feed them, you?ll take them away!? Most dogs will not starve themselves (this isn?t true for cats though!) and will eventually eat.

A finicky eater can be a challenge, but a nutritious diet and healthy body weight are so important to your pet?s health and longevity, that it should be taken seriously. In addition to regular veterinary visits and healthy eating habits, always consider having a pet health insurance policy as an additional way to keep your furry family members in tip top shape.

Wal-Mart India suspends CFO and legal team in corruption probe ...

Wal-Mart?s woes in India just got a whole lot worse.

Both houses of the country?s Parliament were to meet yesterday, the start of the winter session and the first meeting since the government in September announced a plan to allow foreign firms to take majority stakes in retail stores. But parties opposing the reform disrupted the session and forced an adjournment. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, trying to hang onto India?s once-miraculous growth story (and his own reputation), invited the opposition over for dinner to talk things out?but that, too, ended inconclusively.

Meanwhile, the retail giant, which in India operates under a joint venture known as Bharti Wal-Mart, suspended chief financial officer Pankaj Madan and four members of its legal team following an internal investigation into corrupt business practices. The Economic Times first reported the development but several people with knowledge of the matter confirmed the suspensions to Quartz.

Internal investigations revealed that government agencies were being paid bribes in order to get clearances for licenses and building approvals for its stores, according to these people, who requested anonymity. A company spokeswoman did not respond to email and text messages for comment, nor did Madan and other suspended staff members. Their suspensions are pending investigation.

MarketWatch reported that the company confirmed the suspensions, quoting a Bharti Wal-Mart spokeswoman?s email: ?We are committed to conducting a complete and thorough investigation. Walmart and Bharti have suspended a few associates pending the outcome of the investigation.?

This week, Wal-Mart Asia CEO Scott Price addressed employees after the suspensions and reiterated that the company will operate only on the right side of the law, no matter how difficult it is. ?He said the company will have zero tolerance to any violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the company is making significant investments in ensuring this.

?We will not tolerate non-compliance anywhere or at any level of the company. We are working diligently to strengthen our compliance programmes and dedicating considerable resources to this effort. In fact, the company has spent more than USD35 million on its global FCPA compliance review efforts over the past 18 months,? the company said in a statement last week.

India is ranked 95th out of 175 countries in the corruption perception index, and it is widely held that running a business without bribing government officials is nearly impossible here.

This is the second country in which Wal-Mart has faced allegations of corruption. After a scandal in Mexico that found payments were made to local officials as the retailer aggressively expanded, Wal-Mart initiated internal investigations in Brazil, China and India. Investigations in the Indian arm have been going on for a couple of months, and escalated last week, when the Hong Kong-based Price arrived.

The suspensions are just the latest in a string of problems Bharti Wal-Mart has been facing in India. Investments by foreign companies in multi-brand retail stores in India had been limited to wholesale outlets as a protectionist measure to save small shop owners from big retail. Then in September, the government announced retail would be open to 51% equity investment from foreign companies.

Bharti Wal-Mart is a 50-50 joint venture established in 2007 between Bharti Enterprises and Wal-Mart. Currently, Wal-Mart operates two cash- and-carry outlets, which are essentially wholesale stores, in India. It also provides back-end support in merchandising and logistics to multi-brand retail stores. These retail stores themselves are run by Bharti under the brand name Easy Day.

However, the company is now being investigated for violating the regulation and investing over $100 million in a unit owned by Bharti Enterprises. This was done through a complex mechanism involving debentures which could later be converted to equity. ?The allegation is that this money was invested in 2010 when FDI was disallowed in the sector.

The suspension of the CFO and the investigation into bribery, however, is unrelated to that probe.

The government has called for an all-party meeting on Monday to assuage the concerns of the opposition. The uncertainty about foreign retail and therefore Wal-Mart?s investments in India continue. Other large retailers including Tesco, Ikea and Carrefore are also awaiting Parliament support of the bill before committing to invest in India.

?Once the diversity of the microbial world is catalogued? it will make astronomy look like a pitiful science.? ?Julian Davies

For Neil Armstrong, the big step was the moon. For Jeff Leach it is the colon.

Jeff Leach called me not so long ago to ask me about mine. Well, that isn?t totally right. He called to tell me about other peoples. Is that worse?

In the colon live ?trillions of bacteria (though such estimates are guesses as wild as those about the numbers of stars), a universe of planet-sized cells just above the sphincter. These bacteria are important, but uncharted. The most poorly known feature of these beasts is how they vary from one person to the next and why. This is a version of the belly button mystery I discussed last week?the mystery of what determines just which microbes you have and depend on (or fight). Leach wants to understand what determines the wild life of your colon, badly.

Most readers of Scientific American are aware that their bodies are covered inside and outside with microbes on which his or her life, odor, and much else depend?their cloak of cells. But this consensus is new. In the 1960s Lynn Margulis posited that the mitochondria in our cells and chloroplasts in plant cells were relictual bacteria, evidence of ancient symbioses. She also argued that symbiosis were everywhere, a dominant feature of evolution. She was right on all counts, the founding mother of the microbiome. She was also ignored. Not long after, Carl Woese went into his lab proposing to look at the nucleotides of bacteria to create evolutionary trees of microbes. He was laughed at, but went on to found modern evolutionary biology. Then, in the 1980s, while using LCD and driving around with his girlfriend Kary Mullis had the idea to use the enzymes in an Archaean (a group of microbes that Woese put on a totally unique branch of the tree of life) to amplify DNA and, in essence, produce much more of it for analysis. Together these accomplishments set the stage for the modern field of microbial ecology and evolution. For all of this work, Margulis, Woese and Mullis were regarded as crazy. Now their accomplishments are so well accepted that, among young students, they seem scarcely to be regarded.

Leach wants to take the insights of Margulis and the tools of Woese and Mullis and go big. He is a go big or go home kind of guy. He has the ?let?s go kick some butt,? demeanor of a high school wrestling coach one win shy of the state championship. His perspective is that he can only really understand what is going on by seeing samples of feces (from toilet paper wipes) from thousands and thousands of samples. With those samples, Leach wants to study the variation among people in terms of their gut microbes (or at least the ones that end up in feces). This is the perspective of someone new to the field, someone with the good fortune to be able to work after the earlier, harder, times. Leach wants to see with the tools he has inherited. Galileo had a telescope. Anton Von Leeuwenhoek had a single-lens microscope. Leach has bundled up pieces of used Charmin, that and modern genetics.

[Image 1. Jeff Leach sampling home and body microbes in Namibia. The home samples are part of our Wild Life of Our Homes project; yourwildlife.org].

Leach thinks that there are healthy microbial communities and sick ones, that most of us tend to have somewhat to very sick ones and if we understand the variation we might understand how to eat, live, and farm (microbes) in such a way as to favor the healthy ones. This is an exciting idea, but it, like hundreds of other exciting ideas about gut microbes, still needs to be tested. The field is in its stumbling infancy. The field needs the data; Leach needs the data.

Leach is an anthropologist. He specializes in talking to people, not probing them. He needs help and so he has been making phone calls and in a global version of phone tag he has pulled together a super team of microbiologists, and then me, to try to help with his endeavor. The leaders of this large endeavor are now Leach, Rob Knight at the University of Colorado and Jack Gilbert at University of Chicago and Argonne National Lab, but the team is a who is who of the microbial ecologists of the body, intellectual descendents of Margulis, Mullis and Woese. Knight and Gilbert are now leading the technical part of the project and Leach is coordinating its public reach and offering anthropological context. ?Knight and Gilbert will use fancy molecular tools inspired by Woese and Mullis to see which species are in the feces of those who are sampled and then tell the participants about those species. My job, I think, is to help coordinate what we tell folks about those species. I?m the microbial biographer (stay tuned here for the edited biography)

But here is the problem, a problem we have encountered in our own studies of belly buttons and homes (yourwildlife.org). Microbial ecology and evolution take time. Processing samples is slow and budgets are fixed such that the more people are interested in projects, beyond some limit, the more can be understood about the invisible world, but also the longer it takes to get the job done. Leach had the idea to get around this problem by funding his project via Indiegogo (it sounds like a rash you get from being on Leach?s wrestling team, but it is actually a crowd-funding website). Participants will donate funds to have their samples processed, enough funds to cover the cost of processing their samples (which pays for their piece of a robot, a technician and a postdoc?yes, and this is terrible, the robot gets paid the most). As a starting point, he and Rob Knight have decided that if 275,000 are raised, it will be enough to get the project off the ground (again, damned robot). The project is called American Gut (to be followed, one hopes, by Australian Gut, Thai Gut, etc?, following in American Idol footsteps). You can donate here, but there is also a comment section so if you don?t have the cheddar you can always just leave a note.

[Image 2. Rob Knight in his lab at the University of Colorado].

What is interesting and exciting about this project is that, for your money, it does not propose to deliver health miracles, a thinner fitter you or really anything practical in the short term. It proposes instead to produce science, the science of America?s colonic diversity and the science of you. In this era in which science seems to be getting beat up left and right (though mostly right), a time in which the call is to lower taxes and ignore climate change, will Americans pay for such knowledge? Margulis, Woese and Mullis never appear to have gotten their greatest work funded by the federal government. They did it on shoestrings and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But what if the work the public is willing to pay for is different from the work that tends to get funded, what if the public cares more about the ecology of their bodies than do review panels? This is just what Leach, Knight and Gilbert are hoping for.

Even if Americans won?t pay for their science there is a back up plan. Leach and crew can offer that thing that seems to have even more cache, a world record. I haven?t checked with Guinness, but I am willing to bet that if Leach can really gets thousands of samples he will have the world?s largest collection of pieces of used toilet paper. If not for science or personal knowledge, you can still support Leach in his quest to be the champ.

As for Margulis, Woese, and Mullis? Woese continues to work. Mullis gives lectures. Margulis died last year. I can?t help wondering what she in particular would think of this and other microbiome projects. Her edited biography has just been released. Reading it reminds me of her reckless intellect, but also her battles. She fought her whole life to do what she loved, to study the microbes that she thought (rightly) run and own the world. Now the grandeur and importance of those same microbes have been recognized, enough so that athletes want to know about their microbes and celebrities do too. I have to hope Margulis would want to be sampled, to see her own trillions of symbionts. I think she would; toward the end of her life she was delighted to find a new species of single-celled beast in the pond where she liked to skinny dip. It had been swimming with her all those years, her private mystery. Would that we could have found a new species lurking in her gut too. But the reason I really wish she were still around is to help us think wildly about the data that result from Leach?s samples and those from other projects like our belly button or homes projects, to see the answers so outrageous that even once we articulate them no one will believe them for tens of years.

Giving thanks: Thank you Lynn Margulis, Carl Woese and Kary Mullis for letting us see what was so long invisible. Thank you invisible microbes for letting us exist.

How to set up your own successful online business ? TheBitBot.Com ...

With the huge and rapid growth of the internet more and more people are discovering how easy it is to set up their own online shop, selling products directly to customers from the comfort of their own homes.

Choose your products
Whether you?ve seen a gap in the market for a product that you think will have customers flocking, or you manufacture your own goods, you need to work out what you are going to sell and how you will target your chosen market. Time taken doing all the appropriate research at this stage will reap dividends later on, so ask everyone you can what they think of your idea and listen to the feedback they provide.

Buy a domain name
Your domain name is the website address and you will need to check that the name is available for purchase. Try to choose something short, snappy and relevant to your products as this will make it easier for search engines to identify your site. Beginners should consider choosing an online company that provides everything from the domain name, to hosting, to website templates in order to keep everything in one place, with plenty of help and assistance if you require it. Handling the software involved in an on-site shopping cart for example, can be time consuming and complicated without the help of a tried and trusted company experienced in the problems for new online shopkeepers.

Build your site
Once you have purchased your domain name and arranged for hosting (this is done by a company which keeps your website operating on its own server) it?s time to start building your website. Most hosting companies offer some sort of website-building templates that are simple to use through a ?drag and drop? system. Add your own text, pictures and photographs to show off your products to their best advantage. Make it easy for visitors to access the pages they are looking for, with tools to let them see your products in greater detail so they can study prospective purchases more closely. A simple and effective shopping cart will entice customers to purchase products, so spend time considering the best and most effective way to appeal to your potential market.

A good hosting and template site will offer you a number of ways to collect payment from your customers, via PayPal or credit cards for example. Add on other extras which allow you to view statistics from your site and you can see how many unique visitors you are attracting and how many people who view your site go on to complete a purchase. This information can be extremely valuable in allowing you to identify ways to increase your conversion rate to actual sales.

Market yourself
You can have the most all-singing, all-dancing website selling the most fabulous products, but unless your prospective customers can find you there is no hope of making sales. Your hosting company should provide you with a number of options to increase sales drive your business forward and make sure that you feature highly in search engine rankings. Link your site to social media networks so that new customers can find you easily and brush up on SEO (search engine optimization) techniques that will push your site higher.

Now your biggest worry is making sure you have enough stock to fulfill the orders that are about to start rolling in. Keep your website updated regularly and perhaps incorporate a newsletter to tell new and existing customers about special offers, discounts and promotions to increase sales even further.

Search Forex ? Blog Archive ? Get Useful Information That Will Help ...

It is true in the business world that there are some opportunities which are better than others. The foreign exchange market represents the largest global marketplace for trading currency. Coming up are some essential tips that will help you to exploit the numerous opportunities for financial gain which exist in Foreign Exchange.

There?s a wealth of information about Foreign Exchange trading in the Internet?s vaults. Just do a quick search every time you want to know something. Having a thorough understanding of how the Foreign Exchange market works is the best way to prepare for your trading venture. Joining a forum to talk to others involved with and experienced in foreign exchange trading can be quite helpful in understanding information.

One good strategy to be successful in foreign exchange trading is to initially be a small trader by having a mini account for at least a year. It is very important to know the good trades and the bad ones and this is the easiest way to understand them.

Managing risk in your trading must be your first priority. Decide ahead of time what constitutes an acceptable loss. Protect yourself by placing stops and limits on all trades; stand by them at all times. Your account can be wiped if you are in a situation where you do not focus on loss prevention. Make sure you are always ahead of your finances.

TIP! Stop loss orders are a very good tool to incorporate into the trades in your account. Stop losses are like free insurance for your trading.

You must ensure that your automatic Foreign Exchange System can be customized. You need to be able to make changes to the system that you are using in order to fit with your strategy. Make sure that your trading software has everything you will need, not only as a beginner, but as you get more involved down the road.

Loss Markers

The rumor is that those in the market can see stop-loss markers and that this causes certain currency values to fall just after the stop-loss markers, only to rise again. This is false, and if you are trading without using stop loss markers, you are putting yourself at a huge risk.

Immerse yourself in learning about Fibonacci retracement and how it applies to Forex trading. Fibonacci levels provide certain numbers and calculations that can assist you with whom and when to trade. These numbers can also assist you in finding the best exit.

TIP! Stay away from Forex robots. While it is beneficial for the seller, it will not help you to earn money.

In fact, most of the time this is the exact opposite of what you should in fact do. You will find it easier to fight your innate tendencies if you have a plan.

You should pick your positions based on your own research and insight. Most people never want to bring up the failures that they have endured. Even though someone may seem to have many successful trades, they also have their fair share of failures. Stick with your own trading plan and ignore other traders.

If you happen to find yourself in a losing pattern, don?t be tempted to continue the negative streak by making more trades to negate the losses. Give yourself time to absorb and comprehend events before heading into the next available trading session.

Successful forex trading requires perseverance. You will undoubtedly run into a rough patch eventually, but don?t let it get you down. Continuing to try, even when times are tough, is what will make or break a trader. Always keep pushing and you will always be on top.

TIP! Signals that the exchange markets give off tell you when to sell and buy. Try configuring the software so that an alert goes off when you reach a specific rate.

Foreign Exchange

Don?t think that you can come along and change the whole Foreign Exchange game. The foreign exchange market is extremely complex. Some traders and financial experts study the market for years. It is highly unlikely that you will suddenly hit upon an all-new, successful Forex trading strategy. In fact, the odds grow smaller by the minute. Do your research and stick to what works.

Always be careful when using a margin; it can mean the difference between profit and loss. Trading on margin can be a real boon to your profits. However, if you use it carelessly, you risk losing more than you would have gained. The use of margin should be reserved for only those times when you believe your position is very strong and risks are minimal.

Strategically, pause until the indicators agree that the top and bottom have actually taken form ahead of you setting your position. The position is still risky, although you are more likely to be successful if you are patient enough for your indicators to make the confirmation.

TIP! Don?t believe everything you read about Forex trading. These tips may work for one trader, but they may not work very well with your particular type of trading and end up costing you a fortune.

These suggestions are from people who have been successful at foreign exchange trading. Use these tips to avoid the painful trial and error of early Foreign Exchange trading. Use the advice that you?ve just read, and you might find yourself making money through forex trading.

Public nudity ban eyed in fed-up San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? San Francisco may be getting ready to shed its image as a city where anything goes, including clothing.

City lawmakers are scheduled to vote Tuesday on an ordinance that would prohibit nudity in most public places, a blanket ban that represents an escalation of a two-year tiff between a devoted group of men who strut their stuff through the city's famously gay Castro District and the supervisor who represents the area.

Supervisor Scott Wiener's proposal would make it illegal for a person over the age of 5 to "expose his or her genitals, perineum or anal region on any public street, sidewalk, street median, parklet or plaza" or while using public transit.

A first offense would carry a maximum penalty of a $100 fine, but prosecutors would have authority to charge a third violation as a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine and a year in jail. Exemptions would be made for participants at permitted street fairs and parades, such as the city's annual gay pride event and the Folsom Street Fair, which celebrates sadomasochism and other sexual subcultures.

Wiener said he resisted introducing the ordinance, but felt compelled to act after constituents complained about the naked men who gather in a small Castro plaza most days and sometimes walk the streets au naturel. He persuaded his colleagues last year to pass a law requiring a cloth to be placed between public seating and bare rears, yet the complaints have continued.

"I don't think having some guys taking their clothes off and hanging out seven days a week at Castro and Market Street is really what San Francisco is about. I think it's a caricature of what San Francisco is about," Wiener said.

The proposed ban predictably has produced outrage, as well as a lawsuit. Last week, about two dozen people disrobed in front of City Hall and marched around the block to the amusement of gawking tourists and high school students on a field trip.

Stripped down to his sunglasses and hiking boots, McCray Winpsett, 37, said he understands the disgust of residents who would prefer not to see the body modifications and sex enhancement devices sported by some of the Castro nudists. But he thinks Wiener's prohibition goes too far in undermining a tradition "that keeps San Francisco weird."

"A few lewd exhibitionists are really ruining it for the rest of us," he said. "It's my time to come out now to present myself in a light and show what true nudity is all about so people can separate the difference between what a nudist is and an exhibitionist is."

Because clothes are required to enter City Hall itself, demonstrators who try to disrobe at the Board of Supervisors meeting will be escorted out by sheriff's deputies. That is what happened last Monday when Gypsy Taub removed her dress at a committee hearing where the ban had its first public hearing. Taub, a mother of two, said she got her start as a nudist while hosting a local cable program devoted to the theory that the government was behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"I thought if I take my clothes off, I bet they are going to listen," she said.

San Francisco lawyer Christina DiEdoardo filed a federal lawsuit last week on behalf of Taub and three men that seeks to block Weiner's ordinance, if it passes and is signed by Mayor Edwin Lee. The complaint alleges that the ban infringes on the free speech rights of nudists and discriminates against those who cannot afford to obtain a city permit.

While it may seem strange that going out in the buff is not already illegal in San Francisco, most California cities do not have local nudity laws, Wiener said. Instead, they are adequately covered by state indecent exposure laws and societal mores. But indecent exposure technically only applies to lewd behavior, so city officials have had to craft a local solution, he said, adding that the cities of Berkeley and San Jose already have done so.

"I suspect there are a lot of places that maybe don't currently have a local law (and) that if people started getting naked every day would quickly see a local law," Wiener said.

A look at Israel's "Iron Dome" missile defense

JERUSALEM (AP) ? In four days of fighting against Gaza-based militants, Israel has used a missile-defense system called "Iron Dome" to intercept rockets fired at populated civilian areas. It says the new home-grown system has been a tremendous success. As of Saturday evening, the military said it had shot down some 240 incoming rockets, more than half the number of projectiles launched into Israel since Wednesday.

Here's a quick look at the system:

?Produced by Israeli-based Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Iron Dome is meant to shoot down rockets and artillery shells with ranges of up to 70 kilometers, or 45 miles. It has been operational since 2011. Officials say it has a roughly 80 percent success rate.

?How it works: The system detects launches of rockets and quickly determines their flight path. If it is headed toward populated areas or sensitive targets, it fires an interceptor with a special warhead that strikes the incoming rocket within seconds. Rockets headed toward open areas area allowed to land.

?Currently, five Iron Dome batteries are deployed in Israel. Most are located in the south near Gaza. A fifth battery was deployed outside Tel Aviv on Saturday, two months ahead of schedule. Hours later, it shot down a rocket headed toward Tel Aviv.

?Missiles cost around $40,000 a piece. In 2010, the U.S. provided $200 million to expand development. Additional funding is currently being considered, with $70 million already allocated for the 2012 fiscal year.

?The system is part of what Israel calls its "multilayer missile defense". It is meant to protect against the tens of thousands of short-range rockets possessed by militants in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. Israel has also deployed its "Arrow" missile defense systems for long-range threats from Iran. The military says its new "David's Sling" system, being developed by Rafael to stop medium-range missiles, will be activated by 2014.

West Texas town begins recovery after train crash

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) ? Two days after a train suddenly plowed into a parade float, killing four war veterans, the city of Midland, investigators and the victims' families began what likely will be a long, painful recovery.

The truck that served as the parade float had been removed from the tracks and federal investigators were working to determine what exactly happened, including whether the parade had enough warning to clear the tracks. Investigators Saturday measured distances, photographed the site and tested equipment, trilling the warning bells periodically.

Residents in the town of nearly 114,000 that has long lived alongside a vibrant railroad industry planned a weekend candlelight vigil.

One question that remains is whether the parade had the proper permit. The parade has been an annual event in Midland for nine years, but City Manager Courtney Sharp declined to say whether the group, Show of Support/Hunt for Heroes, had the necessary paperwork to hold the event.

Railroads, though, are a vital part of Midland, a town that sits in the heart of Texas' oil rich Permian basin. Three or four tracks lie within city limits, and the site of the accident is just about 10 minutes from downtown, said Midland spokesman Ryan Stout.

That's considered when the city grants permits for parades and other events, Sharp said.

"We take all steps into consideration when we permit," he said. "I hate to go down that track until all of the investigation is over, but yes we do take that stuff into account."

The freight train careening down the track at 60 mph late Thursday slammed with a thunderous crack into the parade float carrying war veterans.

Four veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were killed ? including an Army sergeant who apparently sacrificed his life to save his wife ? and 16 people were injured.

Other veterans nearby and those who managed to jump clear of the wreck went to work caring for the injured.

Killed were Marine Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gary Stouffer, 37; Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47; Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34; and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43.

Five people remained hospitalized early Saturday. In Midland, three people were in stable condition and one in critical. None of the injuries are life-threatening, said hospital spokeswoman Marcy Madrid. A fifth person who was transferred to a Lubbock hospital shortly after the accident is in serious condition.

The veterans were on their way to a banquet in their honor and were being cheered by a flag-waving crowd. Their float was inching across a railroad track in Midland when the crossing gates began to lower.

Locals were struggling to cope with a tragedy at the start of what was supposed to be a three-day weekend of banquets, deer hunting and shopping in appreciation of the veterans' sacrifice.

Instead, they planned a candlelight vigil where officials would speak and prayers would be said. Mayor Wes Parry said there has been an outpouring of support, including a blood drive meant to help those who were hurt and makeshift memorials with American flags and flowers at the crash site.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza said the speed limit in that area was raised from 40 mph to 70 mph in 2006.

A key question for investigators is whether, after the speed limit was raised, the timing of the crossing gates was changed to give cars and trucks enough time to clear the tracks, Robert Chipkevich, who headed the National Transportation Safety Board's rail investigations until 2010, said in an interview.

Federal Railroad Administration records reviewed by The Associated Press show there were 10 collisions at the crossing between 1979 and 1997. But no accidents had happened in the past 15 years, NTSB member Mark Rosekind said.

Investigators also will look at whether traffic lights prevented the flatbed truck in front from moving ahead, he said.
