Not bad for a couple of pies work, huh?

<em>Season 3 premieres Wed., May 29 at 8 p.m. ET.</em> <strong>Where We Left Off:</strong> Joe married Russian businesswoman Elena, but then she received a call that prompted her to fly back to Russia to testify for one of her innocent colleagues. The Season 2 finale ended with Mel -- who officiated the wedding -- and Joe toasting to the next "Mrs. Longo," wherever she may be.

"Baby Daddy" (ABC Family)

<em>Season 2 premieres Wed., March 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET. </em> <strong>Where We Left Off:</strong> Ben and Riley's friend Katie faced some major drama when they found themselves in bed together after a night of partying. The only problem with their little tryst was that Katie was supposed to get married (to someone else) the next day. Luckily, they soon find out that nothing happened, and Riley and Ben share a romantic dance.

"Dancing Fools" (ABC Family)

<em>Series premieres Wed., May 29 at 9 p.m. ET.</em> <strong>What To Know: </strong> The half-hour comedy clip show, hosted by "Baby Daddy" star Melissa Peterman, features the funniest, most outrageous and memorable dances caught on camera. The dancers from the top two clips of the week compete on stage for a chance to win $10,000.

"The Killing" (AMC)

<em>Season 3 premieres Sun., June 2 at 9 p.m. ET.</em> <strong>Where We Left Off:</strong> Season 2 ended with Rosie Larsen's Aunt Terry being arrested for her murder. Detectives Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) got a call about a new case, but Linden wanted no part of it. Posnanski: Tradition shouldn't stand in Puig's way

Tradition may say that he's left off roster, but in a sport lacking in stars, he shines brightly

Every now and again, there will be a goofy story that perfectly captures one of baseball?s biggest problems in the year 2013: The game is too often trapped by its own history.

This Yasiel Puig All-Star goofiness is just such a story.

Yasiel Puig is, for the moment, the most interesting player in baseball and I don?t think it?s even very close. No, it might not last. But it?s true now. Puig escaped from Cuba after several attempts, held a tryout in Mexico, signed for some big money with the Los Angeles Dodgers, flashed some talent and volatility in the minors, came up in June and is still hitting .400 (.409, to be exact, with a .677 slugging percentage). He has also shown some speed, a breathtaking arm, an unceasing engine and a visual joy for baseball.

He?s mesmerizing. Vin Scully, who has seen everything, is perpetually wowed by the kid. The Dodgers, who seemed DOA when he arrived, have won 19 of 32 games since. He?s been much-watch television for a sport that has very, very few stars -- more on that in a moment.

And people inside the game ?- people who are supposed to want people to CARE about baseball -- are actually arguing whether he belongs in the All-Star Game.

To paraphrase William Jennings Bryan, or, perhaps, it was Allen Iverson: We are talking ?bout the All-Star Game. We are talking about an exhibition game that is supposed to, let?s see here, oh yeah, that?s right, celebrate baseball. We are talking about a sport desperately needs national stars. We are talking about a game that lost a million households in the ratings last year, a million the year before, two million the year before that ? at this rate baseball soon can have an intimate All-Star watch party in St. Louis while allowing the rest of the country to watch a Family Guy marathon.

Why in the world would the most interesting player in baseball NOT be in the All-Star Game? The answer is simple: History. They?ve been playing the All-Star Game since 1933, when Lou Gehrig played first and Babe Ruth was in right field. Ted Williams hit the eephus pitch. Stan Musial hit the walk-off homer. Reggie Jackson hit one on the roof. Carl Hubbell struck out five Hall of Famers in a row. Pete Rose ran over Ray Fosse. Bo Jackson mashed the long home run.*

*In many ways, Jackson?s All-Star Game home run was a perfect example of what the game should be ? Jackson by production standards, did not deserve to be an All-Star. He was hitting .263 at the break. There were better players. But there were no more exciting players, and the fans wanted to see him, and he did something unforgettable, and isn?t that the whole point of the thing?

In other words, The All-Star Game used to mean something very different. It used to be a game of stars ? and that was enough. That made America stop. The 1982 All-Star Game, for instance, drew a 25 rating, more than 20 million households, three times the audience of last year?s game.

Or how about this one: When Pete Rose crashed into Ray Fosse at the 1970 All-Star Game, it drew a 54 share ? more than HALF of the televisions on that Tuesday night were turned to that game. Of course, it was a much different time for television as well as for baseball. This was long before cable and DVRs and streaming. But this is the history baseball still competes against.

More to the point, this is the history that still traps baseball. Should the season really be 162 games long? Probably not. But it?s tradition. Should we still be judging starting pitchers by ?wins? when they average ? AVERAGE ? fewer than six innings per start? Probably not. But it?s tradition. Heck, even the smallest and most obvious changes ? like finally outlawing the ridiculous fake to third throw to first play ? rattles the cages of the game.

And so the All-Star Game ? which used to matter when America was a different place ? clings to the traditions of another time. Why wouldn?t Yasiel Puig be in the All-Star Game? Because, this thinking goes, he hasn?t EARNED it. He has not proven his worth. He has only been around for a month. How could you call him an All-Star already? Ted Wiliams was an All-Star! (Puig making the All-Star Game) really does an injustice to the veteran player that have been in the game for eight-, nine-, 10-plus years.?

Papelbon?s words have been roundly mocked, but this kind of thinking permeates baseball. Why doesn?t the All-Star Game experiment with some new rules? Why don?t they include great players from the past? Why don?t they make it more fun, more interactive, more compelling? The answer comes from another time, when just having an All-Star Game was enough to get people excited. That?s just not true anymore.

The other day, I was asking someone who is a moderate baseball fan to name the most famous baseball player in America today. He said: Derek Jeter. I said, ?He has not played all year. Pick someone else.?

He said, ?Alex Rodriguez.? I said, ?He has not played all year either. Pick someone else.?

He thought about it for a while and said: ?Um. Albert Pujols.? I said, ?He has been terrible this season.?

He finally said Miguel Cabrera, but it took forever, and anyways, it probably isn?t true. He?s the best hitter in the game, but famous? No. Not like that. Who is the most famous player in the game right now? Josh Hamilton? Having a terrible season. Justin Verlander? Maybe, but would the average person recognize him on the street? If you ask someone to name the most famous football player in America, they will instantly say Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or RGIII or Adrian Peterson. If you ask someone to name the most famous basketball player, they will say LeBron James before you finish the sentence and Kobe Bryant just after you finish. But baseball? The game simply does not have that kind of national scope. The game has always been marketed locally, and after all these years it has become a local game. The most famous baseball players are former players or players, like Jeter and Ichiro and A-Rod, who have had much better days.

Yasiel Puig, for a few moments, has broken through that. People are actually interested in him outside of Los Angeles. People actually want to see him play. And with that in mind, some actually argue whether or not he should be in the All-Star Game? Odd. But that?s the state of baseball at the moment.

In the end, I suspect Puig will sneak into the game through baseball?s Final Vote. That?s one where they let fans choose one final player and you would think Puig would win since he got more than 800,000 write-in votes in a month. Meanwhile, in the American League Final Vote, fans get to choose one of five relief pitchers, so that?s exciting.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea's top governing body on Sunday proposed high-level nuclear and security talks with the United States in an appeal sent just days after calling off talks with rival South Korea.

The powerful National Defense Commission headed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a statement through state media proposing "senior-level" talks to ease tensions and discuss a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War. a

The rare proposal for talks between the Korean War foes follows months of acrimony over North Korea's defiant launch of a long-range rocket in December and a nuclear test in February, provocative acts that drew tightened U.N. and U.S. sanctions. The U.S. and South Korea countered the moves by stepping up annual springtime military exercises that prompted North Korea to warn of a "nuclear war" on the Korean Peninsula.

However, as tensions subsided in May and June, Pyongyang has made tentative overtures to re-establish dialogue with South Korea and Washington. Foreign analysts say impoverished North Korea often expresses interest in talks after raising tensions with provocative behavior in order to win outside concessions.

In a notable shift in propaganda in Pyongyang, posters and billboards calling on North Koreans to "wipe away the American imperialist aggressors" have been taken down in recent weeks.

There was no immediate response from Washington, but President Barack Obama's envoy on North Korea said Friday that while the U.S. is not averse to talking with Pyongyang, the bar for resuming engagement is higher in the wake of repeated threats and provocations.

Meanwhile, a recent proposal from Pyongyang for Cabinet-level talks with South Korea ? the first in six years ? led to plans for two days of meetings in Seoul earlier this week. The talks fell apart on Tuesday over who would lead the two delegations.

North Korea fought against U.S.-led United Nations and South Korean troops during the three-year Korean War in the early 1950s, and Pyongyang does not have diplomatic relations with either government. The Korean Peninsula remains divided by a heavily fortified border.

Reunifying the Korean Peninsula was a major goal of North Korea's two late leaders, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, and is a legacy inherited by current leader Kim Jong Un. North Korea is expected to draw attention to Korea's division in the weeks leading up to the 60th anniversary in July marking the close of the Korean conflict, which ended in an armistice. A peace treaty has never been signed formally ending the war.

Washington's top worry is North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear devices and has been working toward building a bomb it can mount on a missile capable of striking the United States.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong Un enshrined the drive to build a nuclear arsenal, as well as building the economy, as national goals. North Korea claims the need to build atomic weapons to defend the country against what it sees as a U.S. nuclear threat in Korea and the region.

North Korea will not give up its nuclear ambitions until the entire Korean Peninsula is free of nuclear weapons, a spokesman from the National Defense Commission said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

"The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula does not only mean 'dismantling the nuclear weapons of the North,' the spokesman said, but also should involve "denuclearizing the whole peninsula, including South Korea, and aims at totally ending the U.S. nuclear threats" to North Korea.

The U.S. denies having nuclear bombs in South Korea, saying they were removed in 1991. However, the U.S. military keeps nuclear submarines in the region and has deployed them for military exercises with South Korea.

After blaming Washington for raising tensions by imposing "gangster-like sanctions" on North Korea, the unnamed NDC spokesman called on the U.S. to propose a venue and date for talks but warned against setting preconditions.

U.S. envoy Glyn Davies had said Friday in Washington that the U.S. isn't opposed to engagement but would not accept North Korea as a nuclear state nor reward it for "absence of bad behavior."

The key to a diplomatic solution, he said, is for the U.S. and North Korea's four neighbors involved in long-stalled nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang to send a unified message: that it must live up to previous commitments to denuclearize. Davies, who is to meet with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts next week to discuss North Korea, said there is a growing international consensus against the North's nuclear ambitions.

"We have every expectation that Beijing will use its special relationship with the DPRK to encourage Pyongyang to choose a different path," he said, referring to the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in a comments made at the Wilson Center think tank.

Washington has been burned in the past by efforts to reach out to Pyongyang. Last year, months of behind-the-scenes negotiations yielded a significant food-for-disarmament deal in February 2012 ? but that was scuttled by a failed North Korean long-range rocket launch just weeks later.

Pyongyang's bid to reach out to the U.S. comes as South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, is to sit down for talks with China's new leader, Xi Jinping, in Beijing later this month. Park, whose North Korea policy calls for building trust while remaining firm on provocations, has been active in reaching out to Beijing. Xi, meanwhile, met with Obama in California recently.

China crucially supplied North Korea with troops during the Korean War, and has remained a key ally and benefactor since then, but has pushed Pyongyang to return to disarmament talks.

"The fact that North Korea proposed talks (with the U.S.) ahead of the South Korea-China summit signifies its intent to keep China in check," said Kim Yong-hyun, a professor of North Korean studies of Dongguk University in Seoul, South Korea.

Pyongyang also is sending a message to South Korea warning that if Seoul does not actively try to improve relations with North Korea, the regime will go directly to Washington, sidelining Seoul, he said.

Cecily Strong, 'Saturday Night Live' Star, On Her Chicago-Area Roots, Drunk Cubs Fans & Her 'Dream Job'

For Oak Park native Cecily Strong, her debut season as an "Saturday Night Life" ensemble member marked a "dream job" come true.

After honing her acting chops on the Chicago scene -- studying at both Second City Conservatory and iO Chicago -- she made her first appearance on "SNL" last September and completed her first season with the ensemble last month.

Strong, who now lives in New York City, described the experience as "insanely wonderful," particularly when it came to the recurring porn star sketch she appears in with cast mate Vanessa Bayer.

"Vanessa and I get to do little subtle things that I like to spot later on while watching the [porn star] sketch online," she said. "I don't watch everything afterward, though. It's terrible to hear my voice or feel like I look fat or whatever dumb things girls' mean brains tell them, but I do love to watch the porn star sketches."

With "SNL" on summer break, Strong told HuffPost she is busy working on a new sketch/improv show with fellow Second City alum Sam Richardson as well as working on some screenplays with friends "to find out if screenwriting is something I'm good at. Jury's still out," she says.

This week, Strong returned to Chicago to perform in "Knuckleheads," a sketch/improv show, with fellow "SNL"ers and former Chicagoans Tim Robinson and Aidy Bryant as part of TBS' Just For Laughs Chicago festival. The show concludes its run with two performances at UP Comedy Club Saturday evening.

HuffPost Chicago recently asked Strong to open up more about her Chicago-area roots by taking part in our My Chicago questionnaire.

What is your age? What is your occupation? I'm 29 and I'm an actress.

What was your first job in Chicago? I started doing professional theater and industrials in Chicago when I was a little squirt. My first real non-acting job was at the Buzz Cafe in Oak Park when I was 15. I had to start as a dishwasher, but eventually I worked my way up to barista and sometimes waitress.

Which Chicago "celebrity" -- living or dead, real or fictional -- would you have over for dinner? What would you talk about? I'm a huge Bulls fan. I like an emotional backstory while watching sports. In my mind, all the players on the Bulls are really nice, decent guys. Especially that Derrick Rose. So maybe I'd have them all over for dinner and I'd tell them how great I think they all are. And how much I like to yell "Deng!" I would also tell Jo Noah and Nate Robinson that I wanted to play them in a sketch when Kevin Hart hosted.

What is your favorite ?last call? bar in Chicago? Old Town Ale House for sure. They've seen me at my worst and never judged me.

Where is your favorite place to grab brunch in the city? I like doing Mother's Day brunch at Kit Kat Lounge. Otherwise, Nookies in Old Town.

What are/were your go-to spots when you have visitors in town? I guess they'd have to go see shows at iO and Second City. Maybe dinner at Old Jerusalem.

If you had to have your last Chicago meal for some tragic reason, where and what would it be? This question is sad because it means either I'm about to die or Chicago is about to disappear. But I guess I would go to Gaudi Cafe on Ashland and Erie. It's my absolute favorite restaurant. The owners are sisters named Betty and Veronica. It's BYOB which I always love, and the food is insanely good. Everyone go there! I never want that restaurant to close.

Cubs or Sox? Sox. Easy. Especially after working in the box office at iO and having to walk through drunk Cubs fans. I've never felt such blind hatred and rage at strangers. I know Sox fans are not great, but I didn't have to walk through a bunch of drunk ones every week.

Wicker Park, 1993 or Wicker Park, 2013? Hmm? can I say Wicker Park, 2000? I used to like to go into the city in high school and pretend I was cool.

Chicago-style hot dog, Chicago-style pizza or Chicago-style politics? Pizza. Lou Malnati's.

What advice would you give to a new Chicago transplant? Go watch comedy. It's the best city for it. And eat at Gaudi Cafe on Ashland and Erie.

What do you miss the most when you're not in Chicago? I love New York, but I don't like how it smells like hot pee and garbage in the summer. I feel like Chicago isn't that way. Maybe I'm just being romantic.

If you could change just one thing about our fair city what would it be? The winter wouldn't hurt so much.

Describe Chicago in one word. It's not one word. My brain is exhausted waiting in this airport because the weather in Chicago sucks, of course, so my flight got delayed and cancelled. But I think the best way to describe a Chicago attitude is that we are not into show-offs. Even though I read somewhere that we have the most vanity plates.

Def Leppard 's Vivian Campbell says he's being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma. The guitarist has been receiving chemotherapy for two months, with four months of treatment remaining, The Associated Press reports.

Divorce Advice: 5 Ways To Survive A Split

The divorce has been finalized, and you've arrived at the acceptance stage. You think to yourself, "It's all done now! But wait... why do I feel so awful and lost?"

The truth is, many women feel this way post-divorce. All of the support they had is now gone, and they're left to figure out what comes next. This can leave them feeling insecure and depressed. Maybe you feel this way? Having been there myself, I have come up with five ways you can transform the feelings of loss into something positive and make the most of your situation for the future.

1. Do all the things you have always dreamed of. There's no time like the present. Why not take your new free time to do all the things you never got around to when you were married? Make a list of things you wish you had done, and go for it. After my divorce, I started singing again and decided to paint. It brought me a lot of joy, which allowed me to seek joy in the small things -- which, after all, make all the difference.

2. Travel. A change is as good as a rest! I find this to be so true. When I felt lost and scared post-divorce, I decided to take myself to Sri Lanka, which did me a world of good. Travel is an opportunity to meet new people, experience new things, and see how others live -- people who have had different experiences, and perhaps don't have as much as we do. It's an amazing way to create the feeling of well-being, and it tends to put things into perspective.

3. Purchase a new wardrobe. I did this, and it was amazing. Something deep inside of me wanted a massive change, and I felt like a shoot coming out of a seed -- I wanted to pop open! And with that, I threw out all of my black clothes -- which just made me look frumpy -- got myself a stylist and shook it all up! It was an amazing experience. And in doing this, I managed to attract my partner (and we will be getting married soon). He saw the real me for the first time. So chuck out the old to bring in the new!

4. Splurge on yourself. If you spend money on yourself, you will start to feel that you're worth it. I found that doing nice stuff for myself, even though I may not have wanted to at the time, made a really big difference to the way I felt. I would go to a spa or buy myself some roses. I would do the things that my ex used to do for me, so that I could get in touch with what it means to treat myself like my own best friend. Waiting for someone else to do this for us is like saying that you can't do it yourself, which isn't true. So go ahead and do something nice for yourself: Buy yourself dinner, some roses, or even some new earrings.

5. Get the support you need. An important way to move on after divorce is to hang around people that are right for you, who inspire you, and who will take you where you want to go. I believe that you become who you surround yourself with, and I now notice that my circle of friends has completely changed. This philosophy has tremendously helped me to move on. In fact, I don't know about you, but I didn't have much of a choice in the matter, as most of my couple friends didn't want to hang around a single chick!

In short, learn to inspire yourself and become your own best friend by doing lovely things for yourself that will nurture your soul and help you embrace how amazing you really are!

May 28, 2013 3:38 PM Text Size: A . A . A My father learned how to read English from comic books and pulp sci-fi novels. He would tell me stories that were thinly adapted Conan tales. He also exposed me to a lot of technologically utopian thinking.

My grandparents were Eastern European Jews living in Toronto, so it was mandatory they spend their winters in Florida, and we'd go down to seem them. Of course we went to Disney World a lot, and when we were there we'd talk about the robots. My grandfather would always say, "Think of the magic behind it all." And my dad would say, "Think of the computers running these robots." There was this sense of come the revolution, comrade, we all will have a Disney World.

My dad was really good at making me think everything through. The scientific method is a totally counterintuitive thing because it begins by saying: You can't trust your memory or your senses. You have to measure things empirically and write them down because otherwise everything you remember and everything you know is colored by your biases and experiences and hopes and aspirations. And essentially your brain lies to you all the time. This is a very hard thing to get a 5-year-old to understand.

One thing my dad was quite good about was giving me enough rope to hang myself and leaving me alone in front of a computer. When we got an Apple II Plus in 1979 there was virtually no software on it. Basically, we got two floppy disks' worth of demos, none of them super exciting. I remember there was a simulator for running a lemonade stand and a Mad Libs program. But there were magazines like Byte that had thousands of lines of BASIC, which you could type into a computer and use it to make programs?that is, if you could type thousands of lines without making a typo (not easy for a 9-year-old.) He provided me with the technology and handed me an issue of Byte and he turned me loose.

Americans gather to honor fallen service members

ATLANTA (AP) ? Americans planned to gather at cemeteries, memorials and monuments nationwide to honor fallen military service members on Memorial Day, at a time when combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindles.

President Barack Obama was expected to lay a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington. Earlier in the morning, he and first lady Michelle Obama planned to host a breakfast at the White House with "Gold Star" families of service members who have been killed.

In one of several ceremonies honoring Americans killed in Afghanistan, the city of South Sioux City, Neb., planned to unveil a statue honoring Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John Douangdara, a dog handler for the SEALs killed in a 2011 helicopter crash. His service dog was also killed in the crash and is memorialized beside him in the statue.

At the American Airpower Museum on Long Island, N.Y., a program was planned to honor Women Air Service Pilots, or WASPs, who tested and ferried completed aircraft from factories to bases during World War II. Thirty-eight died during the war, including Alice Lovejoy of Scarsdale, N.Y., who was killed on Sept. 13, 1944, in a midair collision over Texas.

"It's very important that we recognize not only their contribution to American history, but women's history," said Julia Lauria-Blum, curator of the WASP exhibit at the museum. "These women really blazed a path; they were pioneers for women's aviation. And most important, they gave their lives serving their country and must be honored like anyone else on Memorial Day."

Another wreath-laying ceremony was planned at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park is a tribute to President Roosevelt's famous speech calling for all people to enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

The holiday weekend also marked the traditional start of the U.S. vacation season. AAA, one of the nation's largest leisure travel agencies, expected 31.2 million Americans to hit the road over the weekend, virtually the same number as last year. Gas prices were about the same as last year, up 1 cent to a national average of $3.65 a gallon Friday.

U.S. casts doubt on credibility of Iranian election

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - The United States on Friday called into question the credibility of Iran's presidential election next month, criticizing the disqualification of candidates and accusing Tehran of disrupting Internet access.

On a visit to Israel, Secretary of State John Kerry also warned that time was running out to resolve the deadlock over Iran's contested nuclear program.

Iran's Guardian Council, the state body that vets all candidates, has barred a number of hopefuls from the roster in the June 14 ballot, including former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who is seen as sympathetic to reform.

"The Council narrowed a list of almost seven hundred potential candidates down to...officials of their choice, based solely on who represents the regime's interests," Kerry said shortly before flying out of Israel.

"That is hardly an election by standards which most people in most countries judge free, fair, open, accessible, accountable elections."

Most of the remaining eight men left on the Iranian ballot are seen as loyalists to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Kerry, whose country's decades-old rift with Iran has widened over the latter's nuclear ambitions, said Washington saw "troubling signs" that the Iranian government was slowing down or cutting off Internet access to its citizens.

"Ultimately the Iranian people (will) be prevented not only from choosing someone who might have reflected their point of view, but also taking part in a way that is essential to any kind of legitimate democracy," he said.

Israel and most Western powers, including the United States, believe Iran is seeking to obtain nuclear weapons - something Tehran has denied.

Israel, which is assumed to have its own nuclear arsenal, has warned it might attack Iran if it does not halt its atomic work, but Kerry said he hoped a diplomatic solution could still be found.

"Our hope is, for the sake of the region, the world, the Iranian people, ourselves, that we can have a peaceful resolution, but it is going to have to be demonstrated much more affirmatively than it has been to date that Iran is interested in that kind of a solution," he said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said this week in a report that Iran was trying to accelerate its uranium enrichment program.

"The clock is clearly ticking," Kerry added.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 has also launched to strong figures; 10 million units shipped in the first 4 weeks. One of these was a 'disappointment,' yet the other is hailed as a triumph. Seems crazy? Well, maybe it is.

For Samsung, 10 million units shipped makes it their fastest selling smartphone release ever, so for the folks from Korea at least, it is indeed a triumph. But, Apple sold -- not shipped -- 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in the first 3 days. Yet compare these two headlines from Businessinsider:

We're not going to knock Samsung's figures, 10 million is a lot of phones. But, it does again ask the question; just how much is 'enough' for Apple?

Study supports alternative model for personality disorders in upcoming DSM-5

May 10, 2013 ? A new "alternative model" included in the upcoming Fifth Edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM -5) lines up well with the current approach to diagnosis of personality disorder, according to a study in the May Journal of Psychiatric Practice.

The findings lend support to the new "hybrid" model, which combines the "core" dimensions of personality disorder with various maladaptive personality traits found in individual patients, according to the report by Leslie C. Morey, PhD, of Texas A & M University and Andrew E. Skodol, MD, of the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Hybrid Model Compares Well with DSM-IV Diagnosis of Personality Disorders

Experts working on the long-awaited DSM-5 -- to be published later this month -- recommended substantial revisions to the section on personality disorders. Specifically, they proposed a "hybrid categorical-dimensional model" including not only "core impairments in personality functioning" but also various combinations of "pathological personality traits" associated with these conditions. Goals of the proposal included:

• Reducing overlap among personality disorder diagnoses
• Reducing heterogeneity among patients receiving the same diagnosis
• Eliminating arbitrary diagnostic thresholds with little or no research basis
• Addressing the widespread use of the vague "personality disorder not otherwise specified" diagnosis
• Providing diagnostic thresholds that are related to level of impairment in a meaningful way

Although the proposal was endorsed by the DSM-5 Task Force, it was decided that the hybrid model required more research support before being fully adopted. Therefore, the hybrid model will be referred to as an "alternative model" and placed in Section III of the DSM-5, which contains concepts for which further research is needed. Meanwhile, the main body of the DSM-5 will retain the DSM-IV criteria for personality disorders.

A key concern was whether the new model would lead to discrepancies between DSM-IV and DSM-5 definitions of the same disorder -- especially for diagnoses such as borderline, antisocial, and schizotypal personality disorders for which a substantial body of research literature exists. "It is important to evaluate whether thresholds can be established that provide solid continuity between DSM-IV and proposed DSM-5 definitions," Drs Morey and Skodol write.

Their study included a national sample of 337 patients, who were diagnosed under both systems by clinicians familiar with their cases. The results showed appreciable correspondence between the DSM-IV diagnosis of personality disorders and the hybrid categorical-dimensional diagnostic model proposed for DSM-5. The two models agreed well for various subtypes, including borderline, avoidant, obsessive-compulsive, antisocial, narcissistic, and schizotypal personality disorders.

"[T]raditional DSM-IV categories of personality disorder can be rendered in terms of core impairments in personality functioning and pathological personality traits with high fidelity," Drs Morey and Skodol conclude. They believe their findings "should allay fears that translating PDs into personality functioning and trait terms will be disruptive to clinical practice or research."

The researchers add, "[T]he definition of all personality disorders in terms of core impairments in personality functioning and pathological personality traits identifies personality pathology with high sensitivity and specificity and utility for treatment planning and prognosis." If their results are borne out by future studies using other methods and samples, Drs Morey and Skodol believe their findings support adopting the new categorical-dimensional model for clinical diagnosis.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Two multinational drugmakers are teaming up with top global health groups to protect millions of girls in the world's poorest countries from deadly cervical cancer.

Starting with pilot programs in eight Asian and African nations, the ambitious project ultimately is intended to inoculate more than 30 million girls in more than 40 countries by 2020. Given that most women killed by cervical cancer live in developing countries, the project could have a huge impact.

The endeavor was announced Thursday by the GAVI Alliance, a public-private partnership that's worked with drugmakers to deliver affordable vaccines to poor countries to treat childhood illnesses that are big killers.

"This is a transformational moment for the health of women and girls across the world," said Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of GAVI, which is short for Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.

"A vast gap currently exists between girls in rich and poor countries. With GAVI's programs we can begin to bridge that gap so that all girls can be protected against cervical cancer no matter where they are born," he said in a statement.

Drugmakers Merck & Co. and GlaxoSmithKline PLC initially will provide 2.4 million doses of their vaccines against cancer-causing human papilloma virus ? for a fraction of the cost commanded in Western countries.

Merck will supply its Gardasil for $4.50 per dose, and Glaxo its Cervarix for $4.60 per dose. In the U.S., the shots cost well over $100 apiece, and a three-dose series over six months is required.

The vaccines protect against the strains of human papilloma virus, or HPV, that most commonly cause cancer. The virus, transmitted during sex, causes cervical cancer as well as vaginal, vulvar, anal and oral cancers. The vaccines prevent roughly 70 percent of those cancers.

In developed countries, older girls and women routinely get Pap tests to check for cervical cancer or signs of precancerous changes in cervical tissue. They're treated promptly, often before cancer begins, and few die. And increasingly, young girls and now boys as well are vaccinated with either Gardisil or Cervarix, starting as young as age 9 so they're protected well before they become sexually active.

Not so in poor countries.

"They don't have the benefit of screening to catch cancer early, when it can still be treated," Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, president of Merck Vaccines, said in an interview.

As a result, 85 percent of the 275,000 women killed by cervical cancer each year live in poor countries, where HPV is most prevalent.

"It is a disease that has devastating, life-threatening consequences and it is preventable," said Gerberding, an infectious diseases expert who's a former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Our aim is to do what we can to make the vaccine available."

The GAVI project will begin "demonstration projects" administering the vaccines to girls aged 9 to 13, starting in Kenya as early as this month. Then it will be expanded to Ghana, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

The goal is for the governments of those countries to show they can set up a national system ? with medical staff, clinic supplies, distribution systems and supply management all well organized ? to provide the vaccines over the long term. The program also will bring an opportunity to teach the girls about nutrition, sexual health and HIV prevention.

Already, GAVI is planning to provide the shots nationwide in Rwanda, starting next year.

Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., is providing 93 percent of the shots initially. It's also agreed to provide more shots at an even-lower price in the future, if higher volumes of vaccines are ordered, as that would reduce production costs.

Merck and Britain's GlaxoSmithKline are among the world's biggest makers of vaccines, and both have long provided many for free or at discounted prices to health programs in poor countries.

GAVI also will work with the heavy hitters of global health and development groups, including the CDC, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank. Other partners include the charities, corporations and 18 wealthy countries that help fund GAVi.

In the U.S., the vaccines have become steady money makers since they were launched a half-dozen years ago, but they haven't turned into the mega-sellers initially envisioned.

That's partly because of their high price here, but also because of political fights. Some conservative groups opposed the vaccines, arguing that giving adolescents a vaccine to protect them against a virus transmitted by sexual activity would encourage it.
