Windows and doors have the power to change the appearance of your home. Once the ideal design is chosen, you will discover how much they influence the comfort, warmth and elegance of your home. Over the years windows have evolved into many different styles catering to different architecture and lifestyles. Today there is a wide variety to choose from and each has its own characteristics. Sash windows are the most popular type of window that is commonly found in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses. These also travelled to the British colonies and became very popular in the United States, where it got its name ?hung sash window'. Sash windows have movable panels that can slide open and close. The single-hung sash window is an earlier edition where only the bottom panel is movable. Both panels are movable in the double-hung sash window. Before the sash windows, casement windows were the most popular in the UK and Europe. Yet, casement windows still prevail to be a better option and are used in modern home constructions and replacements. These windows are hinged at the side and can be used singly or in pairs. The design of casement windows is more attractive and sophisticated. They are easy to manoeuvre and allow plenty of light and fresh air into a room. These can be pushed open with a crank. Casement windows are ideal for hard-to-reach places such as, over sinks and appliances in the kitchen. These windows can be left-handed, right-handed or double. Right now casement windows are some of the most popular window types in the UK. Awning window is a casement window that is hung horizontally. This swings open to the outside. Bottom hung casement windows, which open to the outside like a drawbridge are called hopper windows.
Tilt and turn windows, originated in Germany can tilt inwards at the top. These can also open inwards, hinged at the side. The two actions are similar to turning of casement windows and tilting of hopper windows. A single handle is used for the locking and other functions. Slider windows are like double hung windows but open and close horizontally. Yorkshire Light is a name given to this style in Britain. When it comes to windows, there are number of different styles and designs to choose from. A successful selection depends on how much warmth, ventilating and weather-proofing you are looking for. Of course, they should also be able to well complement your home.
